oneshot Posted July 17, 2020 Posted July 17, 2020 I was just thinking what if a family don’t have Electricity? We went through this when our kids went to school. The school would send Laptops home with the kids. Like my wife said does a lot of good considering we have no way of changing them. Our Jobs were upset we didn’t have phones but nothing they could do. We now have Electric and Phones and enjoy them but there is still people that don’t. oneshot
Devan S. Posted July 17, 2020 Posted July 17, 2020 I think the number of people without electricity pales in comparison to the number of families that don't have access to reasonable internet. That number probably pales in comparison to the number of families that rely on both parents working full time(40+) hours per week and then trying to come home and teach. Terrierman 1

This was during normal times the school decided students needed to use Computers. A person told us we was getting Electricity whether we wanted it or not. Soon as we got it I had a Computer built. Still used rain water and outhouse and we just ran 12/2 wire from the pole to the house. oneshot
Flysmallie Posted July 17, 2020 Posted July 17, 2020 In today's world if they are living without electricity and computers then I think an education is the least of their problems. Terrierman, MOstreamer and snagged in outlet 3 2 1
tjm Posted July 17, 2020 Posted July 17, 2020 It took nine years for the local telephone company to run a line 1/4 mile to my house, in the fifth year I demanded my deposit and construction fees back, ~$600, and years later they ran that line in one day when I wasn't home and never did charge the construction fee. They still don't provide good internet service. But during those no phone years is when my kids would have needed internet if the schools had required computers. The next door people came from the west coast and lived here over ten years with no electricity, both educated people, three kids grew up and are successful, the woman recently retired from teaching science; they just did not want to deal with "the grid". They finally had the power turned on when the school demanded she have internet for her work. Then he built a solar set up that allowed them to shut the electric off. REA won't run power to a place that doesn't have well, so any one starting out on new land isn't going to get power right away. We are only about 60 years into electric availability in rural areas and lots of places don't have power within a mile.
oneshot Posted July 17, 2020 Author Posted July 17, 2020 When we had Phone put in it was Party Line. This was about 2000. Actually it was nice being with out Electricity, got everything we needed with no worries. We had Gas Lights and used Gas Engine to run our Washer. Hardest was is Summer trying to keep cool but got use to it. Then getting furniture level on dirt floor was interesting. oneshot
