They would buy legally harvested waterfowl feathers from hunters. I thought about collecting and selling some but instead I give them to a forum member on here. When a bag stuffed full of dyed mallard flanks sells for 2.75 how much do you reckon they'll give a hunter for them? A dollar a pound? Piss on it. 😂 They ain't worth the bag you're putting them in. But we're gonna federally prosecute anyone that mishandles them. Oh boy....this is fodder for hilarity. 😂
Gavin Posted August 7, 2020 Posted August 7, 2020 There is a good podcast on the “Feather Thief”, worth listening to. I just buy my materials. Let someone else process, clean, and dye the stuff. It is cheap enough, unless your a geeked out salmon fly tyer. Used to tie fancy stuff, did lots of tying classes, don’t really tie much anymore. Still depleting old supplies of tied flies and my daughters haven’t made a dent in my supply stash with their crafting. snagged in outlet 3 1

Oh boy....this is fodder for hilarity. 😂 You are talking domestic mallard, not wild. Wild feather buyers will not even buy mallard feathers. They buy other wild duck feathers by the ounce. You are a smart guy. Do your research on why migratory birds are protected. Market hunting and other birds just for feathers for fancy hats. I understand why they are protected, and mallards are equally protected, are they not? Do you really believe the fancy hat market is such that this is truly a concern? No, nevermind, don't answer. 😂

jdmidwest Posted August 8, 2020 Posted August 8, 2020 Even worse, I think you nailed an endangered species. Looks like a Whiporwill. Something has been thinning them out for the last many years. Some thought the mosquitoes and West Nile was getting them like it did the crows and jaybirds for a while. But now they are getting serious and trying to find out with a study of them. Any bird unless its farm fowl or legally harvested and licensed with papers is off limits in possession. Commercial store bought feathers not included. That being said, looks like some good soft hackle for tying there. Nicely barred. "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson

Gavin Posted August 8, 2020 Posted August 8, 2020 Market hunting has not been legal for almost 100 years. Migratory birds, and bird parts are still highly regulated. Got to label each bird with species, date of kill and keep a feathered wing attached In transport. You can’t toss em in a pile until your group limits out and divy them up. Always keep your own birds separate, and labeled, from the other folks birds. Colored zip ties work well. Each person gets a color.

Which explains why he was silly enough to fly in front of my truck.
