The north route is ok too. About the same time.

MapQuest says that the north route is about the same time. However, it has been my experience that Rt 160 is where driving time goes to die . Any time that I drive that road it seems like the trip takes forever to get anywhere.

Though two out of the three Texas brown (Missouri) tarantulas that I have seen in MO were on Rt 160 within 10  to 15 miles east from the Rt 65 interchange. The last one was on Rt 65 at night about 5 miles north of the Rt 160 interchange. Pretty freaky seeing one run across the road in your headlights.

It can get a little dicey dodging the buggies.  Saw the worst mess of a wreck ever when a buggy tried to cross the highway and got plowed.  IIRC it was just West of Diggins.  It's had a lot of wrecks at the 125 crossing too.  Not the safest highway ever.  Seems to get a lot of semi traffic too.

So not my favorite either, though I drive it nearly every day to get into Springfield.  That part of it is a lot better since the overpass/interchange at NN went in.

I wouldn't drive I40 if there was any other route available, wrecks my nerves,  dodging the million trucks at breakneck speeds. In the dozen or twenty round  trips to Memphis for wife's eye surgery, I tried all routes from here to there that seemed reasonable; so if I were doing it, starting in Memphis-

I40 west to I55 north to US63/I555 north to US412 west to US65 north.

There are a few small towns to get through that slow things down a bit, but altogether only added to a couple hours  over I49 to I40 and has many many more places to take a break for coffee, gas or restroom. I guess about five hours M. to B. but of course we always continued on 412 to US62 to Avoca, so the 65 turn to Branson is kinda an estimate.
