does that little brass pipe line up with something?

šŸ˜‚ Yeah, it goes into the top of the water pump.Ā  Ā That's how cooling water gets to the powerhead.

Itā€™ll start...rev high and then die. Ā The throttle feels different than before

I told ya...Iā€™m dumb...do you think I tore it up?

Well, you weren't very nice to it, but those old 2 cylinder Johnson/Evinrudes don't die very easily.Ā  Ā Ā

Like I said earlier, I've seen them bake the paint off the top end, melt all the wiring....and still survive.Ā  How the crankshaft seals survive is a mystery to me, but somehow they do.

Ok...thanks. Ā

I called local mechanic. Ā He said maybe just the head gasket so Iā€™m going to quit messing with it...and let him see what he thinks.

I doubt I am helping it any trying to start it in the drivewayĀ

I finally got around to taking it to the mechanic. Ā  He said when I put the lower unit back on...I pinched the water tube. Ā So it didnā€™t get enough water to keep it cool.

he said he pried the the tube straight and hooked the bottom up...and replaned the head...and replaced the head gasket.

Ā Said I melted some sort of rev limiter is why the throttle felt different....but since itā€™s electric start...not a big deal to just remove it. Ā Said if it was pull start...probably better to have it...so it doesnā€™t throw you out when you try to start it.

$172 later...he assured me itā€™s good to go...I guess thatā€™s aĀ pretty cheap reminder that I am not a mechanic...and that wrench is right. Ā Those old evinrudesĀ are tough

I just looked at the receipt...he changed the thermostat too

Not to be a smart posterior or anything but youtube will have a video of how to do almost anything to almost anything.Ā  Next time before you tear into anything, check to see how to do it.Ā  Can't tell you how really valuable that resource is for anyone who wants to DIY something new.

He treated you better than I would have.Ā  šŸ‘Ā

I'd gladly teach him how to avoid filing those stupid quarterlies on his parts.Ā Ā

Depends on the job, and the YT channel.Ā  There are a few good ones, but seriously, who has the time to figure out which ones those are?Ā  Ā  If I had a buck for every time I've straightened out something that has been YouTubed it would buy my family a nice dinner.Ā  Works pretty good for some things, but outboards are just queer enough to require a certain kind of rationalization.Ā Ā

While I'm a firm believer in DIY, I also know experience has its price.Ā  I've spent way more on many projects, time and money both, than to pay someone who knew what they were doing.Ā  And, if we all were self sufficient, how would anyone make money?

Money is just ink and paper, worthless until it switches hands, and worthless again until the next transaction. (me)
