People Not Wanting To Work

You're right..... they don't have a lot of forethought but lack of forethought doesn't get you out of criminal trouble either.

College isn't 100% the way. I darn sure knew I couldn't afford to go to Arkansas or Mizzou and earn my degree in afterschool activities and day drinking which is a lot of what the "going to school to be doing something or figuring out who I want to be" entails.

People in that boat just need to get 4-5 roomies, part time jobs and do it....no need to spend $300+ a credit hour to "C's get degrees your way to a Bachelor's in Astrology"

So isn’t Rolla more expensive than Mizzou or Arkansas?

Bottom line is College is way too expensive for what you get. Absolutely no bang for the buck. And these diversity jobs are 6 figure payouts. Mizzou has plenty of overpaid diversity  people.

My oldest got a full ride to Mizzou because of her GPA and ACT score. She turned it down and went to the University of Minnesota Twin Cities…where she got a decent scholarship for an out of state student. By the way, one of her professors is on the anti Shakespeare list that I posted earlier.

Something drastic needs to be done.

My son is going to be a junior at Rolla this fall.  Quite a bit less than Mizzou or Ark.  A great value.  MIT of the midwest they call it!  I just hope he can survive Rolla for 2 more years.  🤣

Mitch - anti-Shakespeare professors??  Seriously - who cares?  Compulsive outrage disorder is out of control these days.  And in the grand scheme of things to be outraged about . . . its pretty silly.  Right up there with the Critical Race Theory stuff that you act like is being crammed down the throats of impressionable young minds everywhere.

I understand your point, but these universities are changing their curriculum all over the country almost as fast as the uptick in their tuition.

I don't think that's an inherently bad thing, though.  When these universities were established they taught Greek and Latin, biology and mathematics.  My grandmother was translating Antigone in grade school, and the idea a student could graduate without fluency in classical languages was as ridiculous to them as never reading Shakespeare is to you.  Things change.  What's "useful" changes.  Universities have to be willing to change, too.

I dunno how the UC system is funded, but CA's 40% Latino and 15% Asian.  Maybe hey fund diversity programs because they're more diverse.  I can't think of a reason why a state-funded institution shouldn't reflect the people funding it, whether it's through tax revenue or tuition.

I feel like these diversity programs do more to separate than include.

On a different note:  I attended with my wife, an Alumni dinner from Webster University, where she got her Masters. The dinner was to honor former Alumni who became successful. All 4 awards were given to women. None for the men.
2 of the women actually deserved it. The other 2 were questionable. One of them was an aspiring rapper who’s father and brother were murdered over drug deals. The other was a Catholic Nun who stood up to authority (no intelligent reason in my book). ‘Makes you wonder what these Universities are really up to. I really saw nothing but bull coming from that dinner.
But I got a free meal…that I already paid for 10 times over!

The go from nearly free to as expensive as you want. Almost nearly all of the costs are known upfront. You should have a good idea of your earning potential after graduation and live with your decisions. You can drop out anytime.

When I graduated high school, everyone thought journalism was a reliable career.  Geology wasn't on anyone's radar.  But by the time I graduated college print journalism was dead and geologists were getting $50-$70K starting salary to go frack gas in North Dakota.  Some fields are reliably lucrative, some fields are reliably unprofitable.  But things can happen fast, and you don't always know what a job market will look like two or three years down the road.  No one has a crystal ball.
