Anyplace I have been either public or private walk in places there is beer and pop cans, bottles too. Bait containers, lure packages, wads of fishing line, tobacco containers of each kind, self made fire pits with burned trash and stuff that will not burn, etc. Places with vehicle access you find tires, appliances, and junk furniture. Both places hypodermic needles. I have hauled out items from private places I have had access to. People have ruined it for themselves. So maybe not I causing this problem but other ones have. On public places seen pit toilets vandalized. On two accesses one corps and one MDC those toilets have been removed which leads to trash and crap in parking lot and in the brush/ timber surrounding the area. I do not blame the landowner on bit for shutting down access on their property. Do I like it? No but I would feel the same. There are laws about trashing or vandalizing public AND private property. Pull some of those deputy's off the trail of kids smoking weed....and put them onto finding evidence to convict litterers and vandals. That's their GD job ! They can extract DNA from those discarded needles and beer cans. Get busy LEO's, you have the resources, and it is what you get paid to do. When a diaper falls off a kid and the parent fails to pick it up....do we close down the playground? No we don't. Not the first time, nor the 901st time. How do you walk away and leave all your trash??!! Bygod they wouldn't if they thought it would start an investigation. And it SHOULD start an investigation. Why doesn't it ? They don't hesitate to fill the courtrooms up about everything else. Littering is a crime! snagged in outlet 3 and MOstreamer
Mitch f
People don’t respect any laws…game laws, littering laws, any laws. The rules are unfortunately designed for the A-Holes in mind. Can’t tell you how many times I see people throwing trash out the window when driving down the road. I would venture to guess that if a guy were to nicely approach a land owner for permission and explain your ethics, you would be allowed to fish on his property. On the other hand, things can get out of control on a river bar 🏕 camp out. SpoonDog
I've seen it both ways. A private landowner may not dump their beer cans on the gravel bar. They put them in a trash bag, throw the trash bag in the sinkhole, and let gravity do the work. End result is the same, though. A lot of what I see isn't litter, it's negligence. If a landowner were as proactive about fencing out cows as they are fencing out people, it wouldn't bug me so much. If landowners were as worried about bare banks and no canopy cover as they were about trash, it'd be a real improvement. If a landowner's taking care of the stream through their property then my fishing benefits, even if the land's posted. If they only see its value as a cow latrine or a gravel source, my fishing suffers- even on stretches of stream they don't own. Out west folks may shoot up signage, rut up access roads...but I don't remember seeing garbage at fishing accesses and trailheads. Most places in the Wisconsin driftless you can park at a bridge and fish, and you don't see litter, beer cans, fire rings. Unless it was posted, you could hike or hunt or fish basically anywhere you wanted in Vermont. I think private landowners got some sort of tax break for keeping their land accessible to the public, but I could be wrong on that. But here, people will cut off their nose to spite their face. They'll trespass, they'll vandalize, they'll litter- just because you told 'em not to. I don't know why that is, I don't know how to fix it. snagged in outlet 3
It’s not a new phenomenon either. But now there are more people using these places so the percentage of pigs stays the same but there are more of them. Daryk Campbell Sr
fishinwrench
Anybody that complains about litter and trash nowadays obviously wasn't around in the early 70's. If you think places are trashed NOW, then you would have totally freaked out back then around the rivers and creeks of Missouri. We've come a long way. Having lived out west, I can tell you that the accesses get trashed there too. Dumped, burned stolen cars, mattresses, people shooting off ammo blasting bottles, I could go on and on. US population keeps on growing, I'd like to think things will get better, but I'm skeptical.
netboy
A simple solution to help is take a couple of trash bags with you and pick up some of the trash. Our local Trout Unlimited guys have volunteered to take care of some of the accesses here on the White river and we have 2 stretches of roads, the entrance to Rim Shoals and about 2 miles of Denton Ferry road around Wildcat that we clean a couple of times a year. Yes there are a bunch of slobs up here but you can do something to help. Take out more than you brought in.
