Sooo....

A 20' jet drive Alweld is not the right boat for the conditions we were faced with on Saturday.

When a Fountain and Cigarette meet going opposite directions, the rollers that result are not fun.  Catch one of those wrong in a tinner and you are going straight to the bottom.  We only took one over the gunnel, but that was enough to make the wife very unhappy.  She said that she'd rather run through towboat wheel wash on the MO rather than spend another windy day on LoTO.  I can't really disagree with that sentiment.  I felt like I spent more time concentrating on trying to not get killed than I did concentrating on fishing.

That said, I couldn't figure it out.  We spent four hours dragging cut and live bait, bouncing jigging spoons and keitechs on humps and flats and 45° banks without getting a bite.  Saw a lot of guys fishing docks, but we were the only fools out there trying to fish open water.

I'll try it again down there, but not on a warm sunny weekend.

I went down to check on Mom and saw the boat traffic, white caps, and very high number of crappie trollers/strollers out and did not even splash the boat.  Did chores and headed home.  Nice weather brings out the ID10Ts.

The best bite for Whites & Hybrids right now is not out where all of that craziness is going on anyway.    If you had made your way to the far backends of the bigger creeks and coves, and swapped out the spoons and heavy swimbaits for lipless crankbaits and topwater stuff..... you'd have probably done better.

The mass population of shad haven't made their way into those areas quite yet, so the fish that live in those zones are way more likely to react to an easy meal.

Try it again, but instead of beginning your search on MAIN LAKE POINTS & HUMPS 🙄 try beginning your search in the far upper reaches of the larger feeder creeks (all the way back until your trolling motor is kicking up mud), and then start making your way out.  I promise you'll intercept some fish alot quicker that way.....and you won't have to deal with any heavy boat traffic while you're fishing.  👍

The best action I've seen recently has been on topwater Crease flys over 2-4' of water in the evenings.

Where did you launch at ?

Traffic has been light in the upper Niangua arm. Maybe try launching at Larry Gale and working upstream.

Is the ramp at Der'Vaters Edge still open and available to launch for a small fee?

Coffman.  We made it about halfway to the back of Raccoon Hollow before we decided to bail out.

Looks like about 7 miles from Larry Gale to HaHa Tonka cove.  That would be an easy run if the water wasn't too rough.

I'll never launch out of Coffman ever again.  That place is a circus in the summer and the large openness of the water there get ultra choppy with the wind and boats.  I'll put in at Gravois Mills and just make the run from there if I want to head down the Gravois arm.

If people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles. -- Doug Larson

Coves like Raccoon that have narrow backends are good for bass/crappie, but typically not the best choice for temperate bass and/or bigger cats.

It appears they're open, always a few rigs in the lot although I've never really seen anyone that looks like they work there. I fished this afternoon from Tonka to Bridal cave and only saw 3 or 4 other boats.
