Garden 2022

From the looks of things, raised beds will not be ready for the annual planting of the greens.  In the past, lettuce, radish, spinach will all be planted on Feb 14.  My beds are iced in with a coat of 4 inches of frozen sleet.  I don't think covers will help or dry them out this week.

Anyone else getting the urge?

I left the cover up on my raised cold frame to get the snow and moisture.  If I think k about it I will close it and let it start warming up.  Probably not gonna worry about getting it planted by Feb 14th like mom always did.

Yes I have had the itch also.

I started a few tomatoes yesterday just to see if I can get a few early this year.

Big plans this year! Going  double or triple the size of the garden potential. Adding numerous kinds and varieties. I plan on making a killing at the  Farmers Market  this season.  Will have everything from peas and beans, peppers , maters corn, squash, potatoes and watermelon, lettuce and onions,  strawberries, cantaloupe,  cucumbers, carrots,  okra, herbs , and whatever else I can get in the ground that caterpillars won't devour overnight . They are the worst pest in the garden here. The other bugs I can easily manage.

Will have a big sunflower raised bed this year just because I like the looks of them and it's food for the birds and such.  Yep, it's going to be the best garden I've ever grown !! I got a guy bringing me a dump truck load of river bottom topsoil in April.

Will also have a flower garden. Zinnias, marigolds,Cosmos,Lilly, and whatever else I think it needs .   I sold more fresh flower arrangements last year than I ever expected. They also make my vegetable display even more attractive to buyers with all the pretty flowers .

Going to try some new plant based soil amendments with a no till method in some containers.. With all the medical marijuana grow ops across the country now  there are all kinds of new to me science when it comes to growing plants, and things Ive never heard of  stuff to amend with ,and soil recipes to try in the garden that work extremely well on vegetables too. It will also help cut costs long term by using some of their pot growing ideas in the vegetable/flower  gardens to make it more regenerative with less waste.  Also trying to eliminate all liquid bottled fertilizer this year and focus more on vermiculture and  microbiology.

It's going to be a lot of fun and work, and expensive  but I love it 😍

Have you grown sunflowers in a raised bed before?  My best bet would be plant them into a good tilled garden spot.  They usually have a weak root system and planted in a good loose soil bed, good wind will blow them over.  They are fun to grow.

Lettuce did not happen Monday.  I was able to cover up one raised bed on Sunday to start drying out.  But, it was still too wet to work up this afternoon.  Maybe this weekend.

Snow still around here from 2 weeks ago.  Not much, but spots of it where it drifted.  Most went off today in the windstorm.

What are you guys/ gals using for your raised beds for cover over the top for a hot bed? Any pictures of them.

I have a few idea's but always like to learn from experienced folks rather trial and era.

Thanks

PVC hoops and plastic.

This particular year I was getting lettuce into November, likely until I was pretty sick of it.

I have pvc hoops and clear roofing panels.  Slip something over the open ends if I need to warm up.

Right now, its just on to dry and thaw the ground.

The business we bought out and moved our office had a greenhouse on the side of it as a lean to.  I kept several of the panels when we took them off and covered with metal.  I will have a nice green house on the farm when retirement comes.
