I was just told by a mechanic here in St Louis that mercury motors 30 Hp and below are Tohatsu. The bigger Mercurys are Yamahas??? The bigger Tohatsus are a Honda???

I know the small 4 strokes are Tohatsus, I have a 9.9 ProKicker- not much to them.  Had not heard that about the larger motors….

Mercury and Yamaha got divorced many years ago.  Shortly after the Mariner line was discontinued.

As far as I know Tohatsu and Honda are independent of each other. 

Mercury uses Tohatsu powerheads on their "portable" outboards, but with Mercury marine ignition and charging systems.......which IMO is ignorant because nobody designs better ignition/charging systems than the Japs do.    Finding a Japanese outboard with ignition failure is as rare as finding a dinosaur bone in an owl ball.  Whereas Mercury has historically always had the most pathetic ignition/charging systems in the industry.

Are you looking for a new motor.  I would go somewhere outside of St. Louis to do it.

Actually it's the Mercury DEALERS that make a killing off of them.......But they'll never tell ya the truth.  Mostly because they don't care to know, and are better off not knowing.
