I think none in SW MO, mostly because the spay and neutering programs are effective. True but I don't think it's because the spay and neutering programs are effective. My wife recently found a dog and we took it the the SWMO Humane Society to have it checked for a chip. They were very serious about letting us know that they couldn't take the dog. Not that we had any intentions of leaving it there, but several of them told us NO without us asking. They are usually completely full. They spayed Charli Suzi for free. I didn't get her there but a program that they have with Springfield allowed them to cover the cost since she's part pit. All I had to do was call and schedule an appointment and pay a deposit. They tried to return the deposit when I picked her up but I donated it to the shelter.

Most shelters won't take strays no matter how illogical. They go through animal control offices. It's a very flawed system. The fact that Springfield Humane Society went no-kill was a big deal. We've had nothing but rescues for 25 years from probably 4 or 5 different organizations. I can't even keep them all straight--the dogs or the shelters.

I can't even keep them all straight--the dogs or the shelters. I saw a post on FB last night from them saying they were completely full. Then you have everybody going out and buying these designer dogs. I know there is a need but not always. I know people that drove to Nebraska and paid 1,500 for a dog for their kid. They could have found just as good of a dog at a shelter. But they wouldn't be able to show their friends the dogs papers I guess. We have been the same way for a long time. Only rescue dogs from various shelters. All have been good dogs. My current meathead didn't come from a shelter but I still consider her a rescue. A kid with only a few days to get rid of several puppies before his parents took care of the problem. That's why I had to take her at 5 weeks old. Sad deal but I got 3 of the 6 out of there.
