Boat registration question

Hope this is the right place to put this. I'm looking for a used 16' or so fishing boat. Wanting a 25-50hp 2-stroke, with seats the missus won't object to & a live well. Decent trolling motor & fish finder a bonus.

My question however, is what is involved in registering a boat bought in KS in MO? What documentation do I need to have from the sell to be able to title & register everything here?

I bought mine out of Kansas but it's been 10 years or more. I don't remember exactly what all I needed but it wasn't a big deal. I know my trailer wasn't required to be titled in Kansas. I just had to have a bill of sale.

Call your local license bureau and ask them, point blank,.... "What all do I need to bring to you?".... before you ever even bother to go up there. And take notes.

  Otherwise they will come up with some piddlyassed  reason to ruin your day.   It's what they live for.

Missouri Resident Titling and Registration Requirements

You have 60 days from the date of purchase to title your newly purchased boat, vessel, or outboard motor. If you do not title the boat, vessel, or outboard motor, there is a title penalty of $10 on the 61st day after purchase. The penalty increases another $10 for every 30 days you are late with a maximum penalty of $30.

To title and register a boat, vessel, or outboard motor in the state of Missouri, the owner must submit the following items at any Missouri license office:

1. The Manufacturer's Statement of Origin (MSO), properly assigned Certificate of Title (see instructions), descriptive bill of sale, or an Application for Missouri Watercraft or Outboard Motor Title and Registration (Form 93) certified by a licensed Missouri boat dealer;
2. A signed Application for Missouri Boat/Vessel or Outboard Motor Title and Registration (Form 93);
3. A Paid personal property tax receiptlisting the boat or vessel, or a statement of non-assessment from the County (or city of St. Louis) Collector or Assessor for the previous year; and
   1. If the boat/vessel is not listed on the tax receipt ("boat" is acceptable), the following must be submitted:
      1. A corrected tax receipt (if manually corrected, it must contain the county seal); or
      2. A letter from the County Collector (on letterhead or containing the county seal) reflecting payment of taxes.
4. A Notarized Lien Release, if applicable.

If you don’t have it all you won’t get it registered.  If the seller doesn’t have the original title you won’t get it registered.   Don’t buy that old line that the state hwy patrol can verify it wasn’t stolen and will give you a title.    It’s a gamble you will probably lose.  JMO.

For states that don't title, the paperwork for the registration in the previous state, in the previous owner's name, and the bill of sale form (I think it's form 1957), filled out by the previous owner that matches the registration documents. 

The registration documents are key, just a bill of sale isn't enough.

     I had no problem JMO and the highway patrol came to my house to verify. All my ducks were in a row. I know it doesn't go this smooth for everyone.

You might title the trailer as homemade if it doesn’t have a vin number or mfg plate if you have a friend at an inspection station.

  That worked for me once but I have heard that now homemade needs to be inspected by highway patrol. Just hearsay don't take it for the gospel. I did mine at a regular inspection station. Years ago. DMV issued new serial number.
