Johnsfolly Posted June 23, 2022 Posted June 23, 2022 This is a difficult story for me. On one hand this is a great achievement for this girl. On the other does it set her up for disappointment later? Seems to me that her father is wealthy enough to pursue this goal of her breaking this record. Maybe she will be later in life to pursue similar goals in the future. I feel thar taking kids on these once in a lifetime trips could cause a where do you go from this ultimate success later in life issues. Anyway here's the story. https://www.outdoorlife.com/fishing/12-year-old-girl-catches-pending-world-record-blue-marlin-off-west-african-coast/ Daryk Campbell Sr 1
Quillback Posted June 23, 2022 Posted June 23, 2022 No doubt serious money was spent to catch that fish. If I read that right, they traveled in a boat from FL to the Verde islands. Doing a quick search, that's roughly 3700 miles. I would think you'd have to refuel on the way over, must be a way to do it, kind of curious about that. Johnsfolly 1
Daryk Campbell Sr Posted June 23, 2022 Posted June 23, 2022 I understand your thoughts John and am conflicted in my own thoughts about this. We can just do what we believe is best for our children, and hope we did the right things. I would love to see a fish of that size caught. In person. DADAKOTA Posted June 23, 2022 Posted June 23, 2022 Money can get you things others can never even think about. What she did is a feat, but money put her in the location to do it. In reality I could care less about billfish records as most billfishing is an elitist sport.

Not elitist IMO just a very expensive sport. I would like to catch one and I am by far an elitist, but it will never happen for the price cost. For us could be affordable with 5 or 6 folks. Problem would be whether you could get on the rod. Most trips may not raise more than a few marlin let along get them all hooked up. By us here it's white marlin mostly with some blues caught each year1 and it's a 60+ mile trip out to the canyons. We did go on a trip out of Jupiter. I was up in the tuna tower. I could see the sails come up into the spread. We had two hookups. One simply pulled the hook. The other came right at us jumped and cut off when it hit the line. I would love to do it again. Bushbeater Posted June 23, 2022 Posted June 23, 2022 I was fortunate enough to get a trip out from Okracoke, NC a few years back. My son got the rod on about a 300# blue which was landed and released. We also all got a limit of Mahi which we kept. We had a group of 5 and it was about $500 each for the boat, but it's expected to tip the first mate and the fish cleaning guy is union and that costs also. Lifetime memories though.
