@TerriermanNot many land marks out there. But you know I had a dry place to sleep every night and hot meals most days. I wish I knew how those old time South Pacific sailors navigated those canoes from island to island and even to S.America. No compass, no sextants,  no GPS, no charts. And they found their way home after. When we had Marines aboard the AOE we let them camp out bivouac in the cargo handling area. they could set up after Taps and be packed up before Reveille because it was usually  a busy area. I always felt sorry for them out on the flight deck doing calisthenics in the dark of predawn.

Bends and thrusts from now on.  Ready.  Begin.  Never for me on a flight deck but definitely in the well deck.  Not bivvied but living in the bowels of the USS Denver.

When I was a kid, I lived in a Missouri river town in NE Kansas.  So... I always oriented myself to the River using instinct or the location of the sun.  It was my crutch.  Then I joined the military and moved away.  Honestly... I now get lost all the time now without the point of knowledge... where's the river.  So... I am very careful while in the outdoors.  In my thirties, I got myself really lost in the woods.  Took me about an hour or two to dig out of that hole.

LOL... I'm the guy who gets lost in the mall now.

Only once in 1985, took a horse trail switchback off a normal trail, and messed up.  I used to work near Howell Island Conservation Area on the Missouri River.  Even though it is an Island, one road, one entrance by land, people were lost all the time.  Darkness would set in, and St Charles County Fire  EMS would have to rescue them.   I carry a small compass on a zipper jacket pull, and a larger compass in my day pack.  I bring it on every hike no matter how short, or how established the trail blaze is.  Just over cautious, besides I just like compasses.

There's that !  😅

My one and only time, three of us got lost inside a corner crack of an old plastered wall.

There was a whole 'nother dimension beyond that crack.  The house is still there so I'm sure that gateway still exists. 😳
