fishinwrench Posted March 2, 2023 Posted March 2, 2023 It seems that every summer I notice some bizarre insect that I've never seen before. Aliens for all I know.
MOPanfisher Posted March 2, 2023 Posted March 2, 2023 He actually found it in 2012, didn't say if another one had been found anywhere since then. Still a cool find.
BilletHead Posted March 2, 2023 Posted March 2, 2023 You all look up dobsonfly. These are big and crazy looking. I've had one in my hands. Might be a relative of this other critter. bfishn 1 "We have met the enemy and it is us", Pogo If you compete with your fellow anglers, you become their competitor, If you help them you become their friend" Lefty Kreh " Never display your knowledge, you only share it" Lefty Kreh "Eat more bass and there will be more room for walleye to grow!" bfishn Posted March 2, 2023 Posted March 2, 2023 Dobsons are freaky. Had one hang out while bankfishing cats a long time ago. He didn't bother or buzz me, he was just there for a couple hours. They didn't note the size of the 'giant' lacewing, only saying they reach 50mm. Just shy of 2". On the other hand, I have no idea how big a regular lacewing is. ...and if they're really that rare, why celebrate the guy that (sounds like) killed one? Quillback 1 I can't dance like I used to.

Way back in my younger years when I didn't pay attention to things like this I wonder how many dobsonfly have fried on my Colman lantern while catfishing. I miss that fried bug smell. bfishn and Quillback 2 "We have met the enemy and it is us", Pogo If you compete with your fellow anglers, you become their competitor, If you help them you become their friend" Lefty Kreh " Never display your knowledge, you only share it" Lefty Kreh "Eat more bass and there will be more room for walleye to grow!" fishinwrench Posted March 3, 2023 Posted March 3, 2023 Big ol' dobsonfly's are very common on the Niangua and little Niangua. Scorpion flies showed up around our house a couple years ago, I had never seen one of those before. They are kinda scary. There was a weird alien bug around last year, wish I had taken a pic. We tried looking it up one day but never figured out what it was. Big fat head/skinny body and rather creepy looking. No apparent stinger....but a wicked set of mandibles. There were brown ones, and brown/red ones. Again.....never had seen one before. Also there was something that left a bazillion magic marker sized holes in our yard last June, I figured Cicadas at first.....but I never saw any to speak of. No idea what that was. Insects are an ongoing mystery. Probably always will be. Quillback 1
Hawg Posted March 3, 2023 Posted March 3, 2023 When I was young and fished with bait, a dobsonfly larvae (hellgrammite) was the best owing to the fact that every fish that sees it tries to eat it and the fact that it’s body is very durable. You could catch 10 smallmouth or goggle-eye with one hellgrammite. When I lived out west I caught a giant water beetle in a pond at my house. This thing was terrifying. About four inches long with pincer-like front legs holding a big frog it had captured.

When I laser scanned this little guy it took quite a while to kill him before I could scan it. Daryk Campbell Sr and nomolites 2 "Honor is a man's gift to himself" Rob Roy McGregor
Quillback Posted March 3, 2023 Author Posted March 3, 2023 Anyone been pinched by a helgy? I haven't, but always kept an eye on those pinchers.
