2016 200 G2 ETEC

Recommended Posts

Haven't had a what's wrong with my motor thread in a while.

I bought this boat and motor in 2018 w/ about 90 hours on it.  It's done this since day 1.

I turn the key, the motor seems to go thorough a startup process where the tach spins to the peg and back to zero, and then it cranks.  Takes 5-6 seconds for it to finish thinking about cranking.  Then it cranks and starts on the first hit.

Does this every time.  Has never failed to start and runs like a champ...once it decides to crank.

Starting battery fully charged and showing 13v's on the dash.

Any ideas?

I had a Suzuki 140 four stroke and it did a similar scenario when starting. The tach would peg and then reset to a number. That number was indicating the number of hours on the motor x100 hours. After it reached 600 hours the red light would flash 1 time for each 600 hours over. Whole process took about 5 seconds before it would crank. Might check your manual and see if it is the same.

If all else fails...read the manual.  :)

Will do.

Intermittent ground fault.

Clean & tighten battery terminals, and check all the connections (harness plugs & Amphenol connectors) under the cowling, under the helm (gauges), and at the key switch.

A black wire SOMEWHERE is not making an uninterrupted or solid enough connection.

System check @ key ON should only take 2-3 seconds.   A sketchy ground connection will stop/reset and begin another system check......so yours is probably going through multiple system checks before initiating the "ALL IS WELL" signal.

Appreciate it Wrench.  Electricity not my strong suit but will give it a try.

If you haven't already, you need to get the software to diagnose these newer etecs.  There's a market for someone GOOD to work on them.

I have a 150 first gen and am in the same boat. My dealers last true Etec guy moved on and I don't trust the new guys. My motor has been great, but if I don't have anybody I can trust to work on it then I may have to bite the bullet and move over to one of those black things simply because every dealer has somebody who can work on those.

I honestly don't want to work on computer controlled outboards of any type or brand that have performance issues.   My reputation is currently outstanding.....and I'd prefer to not screw that up.

9 times out of 10 what the diagnostic programs tell me to service does NOT cure the problem because the system is attempting to correct itself.  The most important thing to an outboard ECM is to run....but RUN CLEAN.                                     In short.........There's just too much going on there.    I'm in this game to make a living, and keep my customers happy, not piss my life away.

I'm happy to do maintenance service on them, but otherwise I'm hiding from them.
