yaknar Posted August 9, 2023 Posted August 9, 2023 I got on the river this week and thought I would post a couple pictures of a few of the fish. The largest bass I caught was very dark in color. I don’t think I have caught one that dark before. I had a good day catching smallmouths, goggle eyes, pumpkinseeds, a gar that got off and a couple of walleyes, someone must be stocking them on the James…..only kidding. I found the walleyes in the deep holes and caught them on crankbaits. One was pretty nice…. I did catch a fish, I thought, and while I was reeling it in it seemed sort of strange when I finally saw it, it looked like the line had wrapped around a stick with the fish caught on the lure. When it got close enough, a gar had the fish in its mouth and my lure was still in the fish’s mouth, swimming upstream. Needless to say they both got away….but they left me a story to tell….Great day on the river….released them all….. Flysmallie, rps, MObassin95 and 8 others 11

yaknar Posted August 17, 2023 Author Posted August 17, 2023 I thought Longear Sunfish were “pumpkinseeds” …..
FishnDave Posted August 17, 2023 Posted August 17, 2023 Wow, looks like you had a great day of fishing!! That particular fish could be a Longear hybrid, or its colors are just really washed out? Plus each fish just looks different from the next, so... They are different species. For reference purposes... Pumpkinseed Sunfish: Longear Sunfish: Ham, BilletHead and nomolites 3
Ham Posted August 18, 2023 Posted August 18, 2023 Ahhh, the common name confusion thing. I love Longear Sunfish. They are a fine little fish. I wish we had Pumpkinseed too, but we don’t. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
