Ryan Miloshewski Posted October 25, 2023 Author Posted October 25, 2023 3 to 9 inches of rain last night and today on the West side of the state. Hallelujah! Keep it coming. Still going to be tough in KS this weekend. Middle zone opener should be pretty solid if it keeps raining until Sunday. I would really like a few SWMO rivers to escape.. Well, you were blessed to have that rain. Yes, would like that deluge here in SWMO but only 6/10s here total. Weatherman says it is still coming we will see. If only we could get a puddle in our little pond in the timber for the middle zone opener, I would be happy. Ryan Miloshewski Posted December 1, 2023 Author Posted December 1, 2023 Well I finally got out this morning with Hank. Back is dang near 100% and was able to walk the whole way without many breaks so that's great news. Ducks are here, too. I didn't take any pictures, but I ended with five--three mallards, a redhead and a wigeon. Last group was 30 mallards landing in my face at 15 yards. It was a good knock on the noggin to remind me why I love it. Ryan Miloshewski Posted December 21, 2023 Author Posted December 21, 2023 Finally was able to get out starting last Saturday until today. Started by hammering honkers with my buddy Josh Posley who guides around the KC area. It was a great morning for eight of us friends. Monday we got some fresh ducks, finally, and they cooperated fairly well. We are still plagued with stale ducks who go from refuge to feed and back every day. Got out Tuesday and Wednesday with my buddy Dave and he shot them good while I worked from the berm (unfortunately) for a while. First ducks of the day he had a pair of mallards come in and got a nice surprise. Banded this year in South Dakota. Today sucked for me. Dave and I went to separate areas and he shot a limit and a speck and I didn't even fire my gun. Heck of a Winter Solstice, 61 degrees and cloudy! Tomorrow is another day. I sure am glad and happy to be waking up at 2:30am, walking miles, getting wet, and seeing a cheeto leg dropping from the skies into my decoys! ness, BilletHead, luckycraft and 2 others 5 “To those devoid of imagination a blank place on the map is a useless waste; to others, the most valuable part.”--Aldo Leopold
BilletHead Posted February 3 Posted February 3 Let's finish up the BilletHeads poor waterfowl season. Last week early while things were still frozen up I found some mallards in some of the ice storm and rain run off. Just some sheet water. I set up and got a couple Green heads. Found a second pond which was really low and shallow. It was completely dry last summer and had grown some smartweed. When I seen mallards dropped in there I checked it out. It had a frozen spot and some open water in the smartweed. About 30 mallards on it. I thought there was no way it was a roost so next morning I was there at dark thirty. As I went along the dam to set up there were the mallards flushing. Could hardly believe it. I went ahead and set up. The only open water was the small roost spot. I waded out and ploped a half dozen decoys. Hid in the smartweed. A few came back and looked things over. Water froze back up twice even though I kept it stirred twice. If you can see by the video what I had. BilletHead Posted February 4 Posted February 4 Then Thursday morning with Pat. Duck season over it's time for geese. Again a very low pond. Thawed and being used. Hard to hide in bare shoreline. Did our best. We came across the high spot to drive down to the pond. Another roost with ducks, canadas and white front geese blowing out. Go figure. Set up and took truck into the sunrise to park. Back down the hill to hide. Mallards for first two hours landing in the goose decoys. Again go figure. Soon many, many Canadas in the air. Most making one pass and circle to spot something wrong. Soon that flight was over as we seen them landing at another place in the distance. A couple hours later they were up an working around. Some seeing us again and some dropping in. We managed four. Pat was not shooting up to par. Rare for that. She said I don't know what was wrong. Good morning regardless. Four fatties with good skin and inside fat for rendering. nomolites and Ryan Miloshewski 2 "We have met the enemy and it is us", Pogo If you compete with your fellow anglers, you become their competitor, If you help them you become their friend" Lefty Kreh " Never display your knowledge, you only share it" Lefty Kreh "Eat more bass and there will be more room for walleye to grow!" BilletHead Posted February 4 Posted February 4 Friday I couldn't get too excited. I passed feeling like a bum but Saturday we got after it again. Hit the easy button. Was windy. I like that. Birds coming off roost looking for somewhere will be low to the ground. Set up and hunkered in the layouts. About sunrise a single came over really noisy. I called not even a look it was going out of sight when Pat said Marty, Marty, Marty. Over her left shoulder was a dozen birds wings set less than 20 foot high. I said let em land and pick a head. We shot one each. Off the rest went. We repeated that two more times and we were done by 7:55. Picking up more wanting in. All fatties, all with skin and inside fat kept for fat rendering. Hearts too. Not a shot in the breast. One was used for Sichuan fragrant goose today. Pat said get your picture taken. This is heavy. As she finished cleaning the bowl of meat and fat I cleaned up the back and inside of the truck. We are done. Good day, good meal and the best hunting partner I could ever have. VID_20240203_071641592.mp4 Hopefully a wetter summer than the last two for next year. netboy Posted February 4 Posted February 4 Great report. I really do miss the duck hunting we had in south Texas, but that is a tradeoff for the wonderful trout fishing we have up here. Always enjoy your reports and pictures. As a consolation, I have seen many lesser Canadians while fly fishing on the White River recently. Always enjoy pointing the tip of rod at them, leading them and then saying Boom, I got ya. BilletHead 1
