Back when there were dozens or hundreds of "flea markets" in the 4-state area, and we used to make the rounds of them over time; I bet I've sorted through a couple thousand piles and barrels of old tackle and never found but one good fly rod, and in a different time and place a single good Medalist reel. Never found either in any of the pawn shops.  For being located right between two lakes there really wasn't nearly as much of any kind of usable tackle as I would guessed. You are lucky to find all those in good shape. I've stopped at countless Bella Vista yard sales over the years too and never found any fly tackle. Did see some heavy (ocean?) spinning gear at few of them that looked almost new. eBay is my "fly shop"

So many variables that can put the lure on the 'do not eat list', 6" of depth or a bit too fast or slow on the retrieve.  

Short answer,  no.  I did try stripping it,  and jigging it, as well as dragging it.  But, you're spot on.

     Guess I am lucky or stupid depending on who reads this post.  Another J.W. Young and sons reel. This one is the Beaudex. The guy put an eclip with nylon washer behind it to keep on the spool. It's missing a complete release cap assembly. I have one found but it's in England where these reels were made. I've emailed, sent message through website and finally called over across the pond. Finally talked to the guy. Said email him my address and Pic of the reel as two different caps made for the reel. Have not heard anything back from him. 

 Ok the rod is a Fenwick FL84-5. I'm not familiar with the Fenwick markings I like the 4wt line on it and 5 throws well too. Ordered a 406 fly line for it. Double taper. Have not fished with it yet but lots of yard casting. 

 Note 406 fly lines are made for vintage rods tru to weight.

Those rods, with sliding rings on cork.....How the heck do they keep a reel secure?     

That just seems like a terrible way to attach a reel.  🤷‍♂️  Worse than electrical tape or tie straps.  🙄

Not on high end cork and lite rod reel setups. I have sliding rings on my 7' 4wt Orvis One Ounce Rod and a Battenkill reel.

But, ya need something better on bigger rods.  Metal or wood seats with screw locks.

Fenwick FL84-5.  was  sold as a blank 84" long for a #5 line.  Equivalent to their factory FF70 or later FF705 it should be about 3oz.

              It really is Imo Glen. It's a thing though. seen more like it in the web and @kjackson showed me a pic of one of his like it.  I tried more than one reel on it. Some of the older fly reels had a thicker foot. I put a narrow piece of craft foam under it and it fits fine.
