BilletHead Posted April 20 Posted April 20 Just something that was bugging me to make. Another crawfish pattern. Ended up doing three colors. Burnt orange, olive and muddy brown. Pretty easy tie and if anyone wants to see how I did it I would do a step by step. Simple ingredients. Hook with a bead, pine squirrel, thread color of choice and craw dub by waspi. Anything you like in dubbing. I think this is a good sculpin imatation too. I have a color thought for that. tjm Posted April 20 Posted April 20 that's what I guessed, I like orange one, but probably won't get around to tying any. I saw a Bonker Zonker demostrated at Clinton the other week that he said was a great sculpin imitation that he used for bass. Done Clouser style with a barred zonker strip, the guy seem surprised when I suggested it'd be good trout bait. A nice little fly but I'll probably not tie many of then either.

tjm Posted April 20 Posted April 20 I looked for tri lakes shirt with BilletHead on it but never saw it. Son wanted to see the SMB seminars and I sat through the first one but had heard enough marketing talk (I spaced out or blinked or something and missed the actual "how to"; but got a logo cap when he asked me what fly to use and I told him my personal favorite, which must have been on his list) and I hung out on the tying floor through the afternoon deal. We'd had to have gone outside to visit if we had met; no one could hear over the almost constant and extremely loud commentary. A couple of hours at Bennett Spgs on the way home made me recall why I don't ever go there. That was a skunk too. A good few tyers and a few good tyers. I did tell my son as we went in that after all the bass and salt flies we saw at the Sowbug there would be more trout flies at that meet and there were. BilletHead and Daryk Campbell Sr 2
fishinwrench Posted April 20 Posted April 20 Those look sexy 👍 I tried for years to find the best (ace in the hole) Crawdad fly, and although it makes no sense to me.....as soon as I quit trying to split the pinchers, and added silicone legs I hit paydirt. I hope that your results are different, but here are my 2 best producers. Flysmallie, FishnDave, Daryk Campbell Sr and 2 others 4 1
tjm Posted April 20 Posted April 20 I tried multiple crawdad patterns back when I subscribed to 6 or 10 fly tying/fishing magazines and they each had a few crawdad patterns each year, very little success so I bought a few that looked especially nice and still no luck; I've done best in crawdad water with either conehead Woolly Buggers or Calcasieu Pig Boats fished kinda like jigs. This one interests me because none of the ones I tried in the past were on a jig hook and none used the pine squirrel strips. It might be interesting to add some silicon feelers at the bend.
