Maybe I just don’t realize they taste bad. : It's more than likely just a matter of taste. Nearly everyone claims that crappie is the best tasting fish there is..... but personally, as for the taste of CRAPPIE, I can't taste anything except whatever they are breaded in. 🤷♂️ Flysmallie and Terrierman 2
DADAKOTA Posted July 14 Posted July 14 I prefer to eat walleye, yellow perch, and bluegill ahead of crappie. Crappie is a very neutral fish that indeed picks up the flavor of the breading, beer batter, or old bay when sautéed in butter.
Dutch Posted July 14 Posted July 14 I don’t know who nearly everyone is. In my circle walleye is tops no matter how it is fixed. A good smoked trout is also up there. Crappie comes in third with smoked way better than fried.
Terrierman Posted July 15 Posted July 15 My prejudice against the flavor of Channel Catfish has nothing to do with what I've been told. It has everything to do with that fatty fishy ick taste that anything much bigger than a fiddler channel seems to have more often than not. Blues and flatheads, cleaned correctly are just plain better.
Members WestCentralFisher Posted July 15 Members Posted July 15 I used to hate eating any catfish much over ~2 pounds, but soaking the fillets in milk helps a lot with the gamey flavor.
