Before and After - November 2024 Rain Event

Seems strange that USGS isn't  funded, but when they dropped the rain gauge reporting on a nearby stream a couple years ago, I contacted someone there and he gave me the option of funding it myself or finding someone to fund it. I don't recall the $$ but I was surprised that it cost that much for maintenance on a  fully automatic instrument that is already in place.

You're surprised a government funded project is relatively expensive?  Come on!😆

And they can't figure out who the heck is supposed to pay for it.

Like the $30,000 Didymo boot wash stations the installed at every trout place, even Greer Spring.  That one required some work getting water to it.

They can track every truck, material cert, nut and bolt for a big infrastructure project but can't find our invoice we sent them with read receipt's for a month....

How could you tell?  You would have had to had Didymo on your shoes for it to be effective....

It was a kneejerk reaction that resulted in alot of taxpayer dollars wasted and everyone having to give up felt sole boots.

I meant that still had running water or that showed any signs of maintenance after installation. Of course it was an ill advised undertaking and a waste of money and effort.  But Boswell's speculation was taken as fact by almost everyone that read it. And no one seemed to believe his rejection of that theory a year or so later when he actually did the science. I've always thought the key factor was taking the phosphorus out of laundry detergents, after decades of adapting to high phosphorus conditions the native algae really responded to the new low phosphorus conditions.

I just got this update from Gary Johnson hydrologist/engineer for the USGS about the gauges and he said: 

 "Thanks-- MO DNR came thru with funding for the next year. Hopefully beyond that too."

Terrific!  I was about to suggest some kind of go fund me account.  I really need those gauges.
