Up spending time with my FIL, and have a friend with a place on Wallenpaupack he bought primarily for ice fishing.  Had the chance to join him for a few hours today.  This was my first time fishing on ice, and prior to today, I could really not see the attraction.  As with any fishing, it was hot and cold - we couldn’t buy a bite on the tip-ups(baited with trapped creek chubs and one 11” fallfish)…but I was able to jig up a handful of nice perch and a surprise nice brown(Yes, I was scoping-and I’m not sorry…lol).  I get it now, and look forward to the next opportunity!

Nice brown trout! I worked at Lake Lacawac while in grad school. Lacawac is about twenty minutes from the western part of Lake Wallenpaupack. What part of the lake are you staying. I always liked snow in the Poconos.

FIL lives just outside Lake Ariel on a small lake(Beyea pond).  We’ve been spending more time up here helping out as his health declines, and I’ve been poking around when I have the chance.  Fortunate that I’ve got a friend with great access to Wallenpaupack; we fished the upper end below the bridge today.  To be honest, this area is growing on me - especially in summer, although the hunting pales in comparison to what we have in Missouri.  Still learning.

I do agree about the hunting especially deer and small game. The opportunities on bear in that area are really good. I have only hunted them twice but used to see quite a few in the summer on hikes around the blueberry swamps around Tobyhanna State Park.

My Grandparents lived in that area. One was on the Lackawaxen River in the town of Rowland and the other was on the Delaware River in the town of Milanville. We used to spend the summers up there fishing for trout and smallmouths in the rivers and occasionally fished at Wallenpaupack for walleyes. Also had an uncle that lived in Lake Ariel and raised chickens.

Yes, plenty of bears.  We were here in August and September and there was a 400ish trash bandit that I squared off with a few times, in broad daylight even.  He was NOT afraid of me.  Hopefully someone harvested him this season….  If I’m ever up here at that time I’ll probably give bear hunting a go….my FIL has harvested them in the past, and always looked forward to it.

That bear may have pushed close to 550 lbs or heavier before it hibernated. If it wasn't harvested before then. Up at Lacawac they had a resident female on the property. When she went into heat all kinds of male bears would show up any time day or night. We did come a 400+ lb male lounging in a service road. We just decided to go a different way😉. One year she had triplets, one female and two male cubs. The state came in and caught Mom and refitted her collar. Then caught the cubs, took measurements and tattooed them. After the males got kicked out by mom then next spring they got into a lot of our gear and just made menaces of themselves until they left that fall.
