  1. Hog Molly's were always the fish you saved for kids or inexperienced gingers to stab at. Sometimes hard to spot but usually would lay still. Miss going gigging occasionally.
  2. I am definitely not a big fan or tartar sauce, however every once in a while it just seems to hit the spot. Overall I would rather have malt vinegar, seafood sauce or sweet chili sauce. For most fillets that are fried I usually just stuff them innto my pie hole and eat them. For grilled fish like salmon and walleye fillets I usually make usually make sauce with soy sauce and ginger paste to paint on it. Goes pretty good on fried taters or grilled squash too.
  3. That's a thumper of a bluegill.
  4. 2 inches of rain we had barely muddied up the little creeks. I suspect if you go way upstream you might find some muddy water.
  5. I love fish sammiches. Especially when I happen to catch a decent catfish while fishing for something else. Catfish fillet with some Cajun and grilled on flat top with butter. Fried egg sammiches are still a staple when I come home after dark from fishing. Hard fried and folded over to fit the bread and add whatever is available whether it be some shaved deli ham or bransweiger. I like honey mustard for a dressing but hey whatever works for ya.
  6. Hog population is very much reduced but that area had a lot wouldn't be surprised if a few still around but I know the trapper for that area and he spends a lot of time looking for sign. Also right with Truman's elevation I would be very cautious launching at Sapps, if your trailer drops off the end of the concrete slab you are in for a miserable time to get it back off of it. Lake level is coming back up a bit but I cannot remember what level it is when it's just a good idea not to launch there. 712 I think on the upper end but don't remember on the lower end.
  7. Hand forged carbon steel knives are cool. How good a knife depends a lot on the makers skill and steel used. Most use old leaf springs which I believe is 5160. Property worked it can make a fabulous knives. Poorly done it may not hold an edge or will break easily. But if the price is right heck yeah IF they have a decent sheath for it. I have a pet peeve about a lot of semi decent knives with horrible sheaths. I have a Knives of Alaska knife that is one of my favorite hunting knives however it's sheath is one of my least favorite sheaths. Tougher than you would think to find somebody to make a good sheath without spending more than the knife cost.
  8. Here is an example of how I accidentally end up with a new knife. A few weeks ago I was making an order from Midway, well I was short of the minimum for free shipping. So I default to knives and found the Cild Steel Slock master and well it somehow ended up in my shopping cart. It is larger than I anticipated too large in my mind for a hunting knife. But I love the drop point shape, and non slip handle. Wish the handle was anything but red but disnt have a choice. It sharpened up quite nicely. It would make a decent bug out bag knife, add a cold steel Pendleton Hunter lite a poof two stainless knives that could live in a bug out bag forever. And no I don't own any stock in Cold Steel but they do have an odd combination of some very well designed knives and a lot of knives that to me are simply pointless, but at of folks must buy them.
  9. Oddly I have never been a fan of the Buck 119 or 110 although I have both. The Buck 119 I own will have to be mine until I die however. When my wife was deployed with her Army Reserve unit to Kosovo she asked if I wanted her to bring me anything back when she was closing in on the 6 month rotation time back. Sure I said how about a knife. Now I was thinking some oddball piece of crap knife from the local market or something. She went to the PX or whatever it was called then AEFES or something and bought me a knife, yep a Buck 119 that i could buy at Wal Mart. And she was so proud that she had picked out a nice looking knife. So yeah it's gotta stay. The cool thing about knife styles shapes etc is it don't matter if everyone else dislike a particular one as long as the owner likes it. Besides I would probably buy one I was pretty sure I didn't like if the price was right and I didn't already have one. Life is too short buy more knives I say it's cheaper than smoking or drinking.
  10. Oneshot, sounds to me like you are "expendable" or as I have referred to it before a speed bump. Die loud and proud while I either engage or decide to retreat.
  11. I don't think scavenging will be easy even at first. Look what happens now when a big storm is predicted or the whole COVID and toilet paper debacle. And a true apocalyptic event people will turn quickly.
  12. My knife phase never passed. It is alive and well. Heck they might be my "currency" in the apocalypse. A good knife or two and good are might buy a lot. Knife fight is a horrible idea, about the only guarantee is you are probably gonna get cut - bad. I have often contemplated purchasing one of the various spears, because well why not since I don't have one. Dang now I gotta go look up some spears.
  13. Honestly I am not a fan of big heavy knives though I own several because I am a knife slut. Those duties are better suited to small axes. However for something to stash in a bug out bag the various Morakniv companions are awesome. Fairly cheap, stainless or carbon steel. I don't want to admit how many I have bought and have stashed in vehicles, duffle bags, tackle boxes etc. Or have given as presents. Be sure to include a simple diamond sharpener whether stick or flat stone. Dull knives suck.
  14. To do what with?
  15. Now that is just nasty. I have a pact with the world. Nothing has eaten my testicle in the man many times I have fallen asleep.in the woods and I ain't gonna eat any thing else's. I have tried them and the cd beer was far away the best part. I like to give tongue a quick smoke for flavor and slice thin for sammiches. Ain't my favorite but ain't bad. Course I also like marinated grilled heart.
  16. I tell my wife it simply isn't worth half of everything we own just to get rid of her, but some days it gets close. She never laughs at my humor and lately just says I can drag it out and get it all when you die. Tricky woman she is. I am hoping for the starving hordes and zombies moving across the land ravaging like locusts as they go. My neighbors and I can for up and make a heck of a last stand. Go out in a blaze of glory as it were. Or at least until I run out of bullets. Besides the government will save us won't they or should I just plan on joining the local warlord, which sounds like way too much work.
  17. I wanted to be a pepper at one point but darn it was gonna be expensive. Think what I really wanted was an underground man cave and a reason to buy some more stuff. If I cant get meds I am just gonna have to die. Cant everybody survive the apocalypse.

    Rub

I have used that one. Pretty good. Part of mybproblem.os that everytime I see one I haven't tried I buy it, never know when you will find the greatest one ever. Also part of my problem is that on any given day I might want a different flavor profile.

I won't lie I like gnawing on bones whether T bones or pork steak. But I also do not like tough meat, last couple butchering have left having to tenderize steaks before putting them on the blackstone.

    Rub

I fully understand. On steaks just S&P is plenty along with a good sear and rare middle. We had an anniversary dinner at a place called Gobblers Roost. The meat (filet) was fabulous, very light on S&P and fabulous char and dead rare in middle as requested. When it comes to brisket, pork butts r especially Italy chicken and turkey I like some exrta flavor so it gets brined overnight and then surface seasoned. I did 3 small chickens (cut in half) and 8 leg quarters today for dinner at friends. Was dang good.

    Rub

I have and use a variety of different rubs. A couple home made one and some that I see while out and about. And they are all.pretty good. I am not into spicy ones, but a basic salt pepper and garlic powder does the vast majority of seasoning at my house. But others from a basic brisket rub to some that I bought like Big Moe's etc are still.pretty good too. Heck I am easy to please throw some seasoning on it and into the smoker and I will eat it.
  22. One if my favorite things I ever saw listed for sale was, "Goat Quality Hay". I was expecting it to be sprouts, serecia and thistles. But it was actually pretty good looking hay.
  23. Right there with ya on this one.
