  1. Big box retail is the dark under belly of angling. If you want to save a buck I recommend you don't shop at all. Acumulating more stuff is just a distraction from what is really important in the outdoor experience. Thanksgiving is a big deal at our home, I wouldn't miss a minute of it unless my life depended on it. After dinner everyone pitches in to clean up while me and the brother load up for our traditional three day fishing trip. Happy thanksgivaweenmas to all.
  2. Friends, fishing, food, that's the right way to do it. Great report.

    rain

I'd like hunt in an overcast drizzle but then the highlight of the weekend is often the bon fire and BBQ Saturday evening, clear and dry would work.
  4. I recall fishing a cove on LOZ that had a mansion with a big black cat pacing back and forth in the yard. If your stupid enough to think its cool to keep a wild cat as a pet your probably not smart enough to keep it contained.
  5. Looks like a fine boat....if my belly wasn't so big.
  6. Excellent !
  7. Good job Brian. I few weeks ago we brought back several spots from the Sand Ford area. The grubs weren't too bad, they made a great dinner and hopefully provided a little space for the native smallies.
  8. Every now and then I'll have a box that's nice and organized but that doesn't last long. Typically my fly boxes are in some state of chaos.
  9. Welcome to the forum Jim. I can't give much advise about where your boat would be appropriate how how to run it but I do want to point out that when to run it is every bit as important. Dealing with mass recreational power boats, rafts and canoes is a pain. Week days or other non peak times is the only way to go.
  10. Yep, using a phone while on the river is like using a phone in church.
  11. Great report. Makes my wonder why I always drive two and a half hours to fish.
  12. That is good news, certainly much better than the old put and take management that the river was under for so long.
  13. Are the talking heads still spouting on about "energy independence"? The talking heads don't understand global markets.
  14. Ham is right about the live well pump, a sump pump would be more useful. When we did a major rebuild on our river boat about a year and a half ago we didn't replace the gunwales. This summer we sanded and repainted the interior with a guality top side marine paint. A little sand made for a nice non slip surface. The gunwales are oak from the local wood working warehouse.
  15. When I first ran across this Griesedieck Brothers Beer sign about fifteen years ago it struck a chord, I guess because the scene looked so familiar. I have no desire to collect junk but I wish I would have bought it. I have seen it in a couple of auctions since but it never worked out. If you have seen the sign or know where I can find one please drop me a line. Mike,

    CUBS/CARDS

Yeah good for the Cubs. I'll be a Cubs fan for the next week or so.
  17. its disheartening that uninformed fishermen with unrealistic expectations get the attention of MDC by whinning about not catching fish >18. I guess I should have been calling a dozen times a year thanking them for giving me a I short stretch of river with a reasonable chance to catch a >18 Your concern about spots in the middle gasconade is very real. I caught more this season than I ever had despite not fishing as much.
  18. Yep, when in a funk the best bet is to go fishing. I was in a funk most of this year, I wasn't able to get out much and when I did not much happened. About mid summer me and a buddy had a good overnighter on Niangua River, later me and the brother did two three day trips on the Gasconade and had exceptional fishing. Funk over.
  19. On my last trip west I was astounded at the number of fracking wells. A look at google Earth will show the profound impact the wells have on western landscapes. I suspect as time goes on impacts to gound water and wildlife will join earth quakes as very real concerns.
  20. No shuttle that I'm aware of, two vehicles and a long drive. I've seen the church group around but I'm not sure they would allow access, your probably stuck using the ramp near Tunnel dam. Be careful driving the back roads near Lead Mine, there are a lot horse buggies and bicycles.
  21. I can't stand 2 piece spinning or casting rods, of course 4 piece fly rods are fine, not sure why but I'm getting too old to change.
  22. Meramec is the name of the river. Maramec is the name of the spring. I think it was a typo made in the iron mine days that stuck.
  23. I don't think there is much surface water in that part of the high plains, flat or flowing. If you want to fish the high desert there are plenty of great options but you'll need to go to the west slope of Colorado or to Wyoming or New Mexico.
