2022 first catch
Daryk Campbell Sr replied to Daryk Campbell Sr's topic in General Angling Discussion
The wind was BRUTAL. I was at Bush's Wildlife Area in St Charles. Inwill work on getting a fish on the long rod. -
Caught my first fish on one of my own tied flies. Full disclosure, I was using an ultra light spinning rod.

OAF a place to meet and make friends.
Daryk Campbell Sr replied to BilletHead's topic in General Angling Discussion
I have met many. Thanks to the forum, I have fished with @Johnsfolly, and @gotmuddy outside of the group meet ups, and I met @Haris122 at the river while I was on a lunch break. haven't missed anyone. I met @Mitch f, @Hog Wally and @Smalliebigsin person at a smallmouth Alliance meeting. -
I have learned of mirror carp. Well, have known of them for a few years, but always curious about the scales. Are they only where you can see them? In patches? Or ar they just in a pattern that you do not see the less obvious scales?

Ther is a MO fishing Facebook page. Someone posted about gear found, but no area information was given. May try to post on there.

I really dont see where you can justify not using your equipment due to $20-50 more per outing. I do things differently than most. My vehicles are older, no payments. My "big boat" is a 14'er with a 9.9 Merc from 76. I would give up many things before letting my vehicles sit. Buying a new version of something that costs more/monthly than the difference in fuel then versus now just doesn't add up.

I think it was what people used before the Ned Rig.

1st fly tied
Daryk Campbell Sr replied to Daryk Campbell Sr's topic in Fly Tying Discussions & Entymology
Thank you for the tip. I was using the "leftover" portion of marabou. The hooks came from you a few years ago. You claimed that you bought too many, and sold them $5/box on here. I made a comment about how small they were, as at that time, I had no experience tying. -

1st fly tied
Daryk Campbell Sr replied to Daryk Campbell Sr's topic in Fly Tying Discussions & Entymology
No, it has been a little while since I've been. Seems when I have an hour or so free, it is still muddy and the creek banks are steeper than last year. I have a pond near me, but I really dont see anyone catch much except in July when it is stocked for a kids derby. I will post when I do get to try them. Ideally I want to try them at a trout stream, instead of a muddy creek. -
1st fly tied
Daryk Campbell Sr replied to Daryk Campbell Sr's topic in Fly Tying Discussions & Entymology
Tonight's fly, well, a week ago Thursday's fly was wooly bugger. I was not able to tie along as we were out of town. Luckily for me the classes are saved and accessible at a later date. We missed one week due to the current events. The fly was/is Chernobyl Ant, and was to be tied a day or two after the invasion. We will be tying it in a few weeks. But for now, here is my wooly bugger. -

Sorry I had to miss this one. The wife already had plans for the family to go to Disney World. It was spring break. Only a few of them left. -
Always great to see a BilletHead and Mrs report. Happy Birthday to her and Flysmallie.

Shout out to Brian wise

He used to be a regular on here. Had some great tying videos. Really enjoyed the underwater experience. -
Well said. The good news is, spring is here. Get you license if you haven't. This one started later than usual for the winter time grumbling. For the record, I like grits, smalliebigs and wrench, along with all of our moderators.

Those are cool. I wonder if the fish would be timid around them.

Are these on your Bucket List?
Daryk Campbell Sr replied to Johnsfolly's topic in General Angling Discussion
I dont really have a bucket list. I have a few that I would like to catch, peacock bass, northern pike, and "walleye from the docks," as Kid Rock's song goes. Pier fishing looks like a fun day also. Other than that, I like my "local" options. -

US Trucker Convoy coming through Springfield next week
Daryk Campbell Sr replied to netboy's topic in General Chat
We have a "kid" in our neighborhood, mid 20's. He has a recumbent bike that is electric powered. He likes to watch the trains cross just outside of the neighborhood. He has his bike all lit up like Christmas, looks neat at night. -
Walleye fishing below Powersite Dam in March.
Daryk Campbell Sr replied to Jim-to-fish's topic in Powersite Dam Tailwater
Another for Lilley's Landing. It is right on Taneycomo, has every thing needed for local fish, and real time updates. -
I've been working on this for a few months. As @BilletHead mentioned, this site is about so much more than fishing. This does however have to do with fishing. When I first stumbled on OAF, I was looking for info on how to build a canoe. Well, the plan to build one was put on hold, but I signed up. Since then, we had a member, @woodman who really peaked my interest. Just wasn't the right timing for me. So, I am no longer in Scouts, after almost 30 continuous years. Now I have some free time. There is a joke amongst the leaders, as you are only asked for about an hour of time a week. So, I have about an hour a week free now. Just for clarity, my son has really gotten into cross country, and Marching Band, so he decided to give up scouts as he is usually doing on or both of those on the weekends. No scandals or disapproval of any policies. Carring on, I decided now is a great time to give it a go. Cedar Strip Canoes are just that. Strips of cedar stacked around a mold of wooden stations. Then fiber glassed. I bought a good amount of locally harvested cedar. Come to find out the cedar trees in MO, which are abundant near me, are not cedar at all. They are Juniper trees. The red aromatic cedar we all know and love is actually Juniper. I learned that a little too late. Luckily for me, a friend was doing some rehabbing of his porch, had some western red cedar, which is what is preferred for this type of canoe. He invited me and the family over to have a fire, and planned to cut and burn the used boards. I asked if I could have them instead of burning them. He was happy to give them to me. I cut them down into 1/4 inch strips. Then used a router to put a bead and cove on each strip. This is similar to tongue and groove. Now time to stack and glue each strip. I gave myself the timeframe of about 1 year. That was from choosing the plans and first launch. Merlin by Northwest Canoe Company is what I decided on. Here is a list of photos for those who like that sort of thing. The whole project starts with a table to hold the mold of the canoe. The table is called a strong back . you may base the "table" to the right those are some of the boards I bought for the project, but Eastern Red Cedar is heavier than Western Red Cedar. The boards on the floor are the boards that were given to me by my friend. They are what make up my strips. Each station is traced from the plans onto a 4x8 sheet of wood. And then cut out with a jig saw. Painter's tape is wrapped around each station to keep from gluing the strips to the station molds. You can never have too many clamps.... this statement has proven to be true many times in this project. I made a box to soak the strips to be bent into stems. In the book Canoecraft, they say to use a bathtub. Well, indonlike being married, so instead I used some of the extra boards and created a box. Lined it with painter's plastic drop cloth plastic sheets. It worked great. well, you really want the stations to be square. I used 10 lb. braid and a drop shot sinker to create a plumb bob. since my canoe is 16 feet long, and my boards are 9 feet and shorter, I have to splice or scarf each level of strips.

You are right, this community is about much more than fishing. That's why many of us have stuck around. I enjoy reading about the beekeeping processes. I do hope this catches steam.
