  1. So, my first fly has been tied. I'm not unhappy with it. Big, big, thank you to @BilletHead for sending me a vise. I found a materials lot on ebay, and went to Feathercraft for the other items needed. By the way, the worker at Feathercraft was top notch. I went in unprepared, with just the flies that would be tied in the course I'm taking online. I did not have the materials list. He helped me and 3 other shoppers at the same time and did not miss a beat.
  2. Some will get this. If you don't, it's a St Louis thing.
  3. Tip I picked up from a camping forum recently. Put all of your dry items that you want to keep cool in a miniature trash can, that fits in the cooler. Put the ice around the trash can. I'm kind of ashamed to admit I've never considered this. Think of sandwiches, meat that may absorb the melted ice water, baggies with left overs etc.
  4. I've had a bit of experience on the retail side of batteries, from watch batteries Managing RadioShack and to car/golfcart/ heavy equipment batteries at Advance Auto Parts. While I cant tell you the hows and whys, and I've heard many reasons, I've seen reverse polarization on many sizes of batteries. Even bought a pack of AA'S from Walgreens house brand had 2 in an 8 pack reversed. It is not very uncommon. First hand experience.
  5. Hello all, I'm Daryk. I'm newly beginning fly tying. Looking forward to seeing new posts. We have a great forum, jump on in.
  6. My head hurts. But I think I learned one or two things.
  7. Well, happy birthday to you.
  8. I understand the idea of poaching and selling, but to make it worth while, is a serious chore. Some may do it for a few extra bucks, but to make enough money to survive, you are going to be noticed. I don't think it is happening that much large scale. I cant believe our lakes could support it. The poachers are not getting the end price as their pay. Just as farmers are not getting the equivalent end price at the grocery stores.
  9. I have not caught or seen one in person. Inwoukd be similar to your situation of not knowing what to do, or how to handle it. Lucky for the current times, I have seen a few YouTube videos and understand that there are not many dangers, such as teeth, extreme razor sharp fins, etc.
  10. That is an even smaller town, but still along the Mississippi river. There is a lot of history of the town, but other than a few friends who live there, I dont go there. It has a ton of landmarks, but late Feb probably wont be very weather friendly for walking self tours. There are a few creek access points. The people are friendly. @Al Agnew may have more info.
  11. I think most of us are in similar situations with songs.
  12. I will gladly pay, I have considered using needle nosed vise grips. I'm a simple guy. I've held out for a long long time. Tjisnjust kind of got my attention. Free online class, been wanting to try my hand at it, and figured why not? No good reply.
  13. I'm looking for beginners equipment, something that someone may have collecting dust. I have nothing for tying, nor experience. I signed up for an online Orvis class, spur of the moment decision. The first class is a Bead Head Hare's Ear Nymph. I know what a bead head is, familiar with nymphs. The rest is Greek. Looking for around St Louis or with shipping reasonably priced equipment.
  14. Cant make it this year, unless by chance it gets canceled/ rescheduled. Wife has me that weekend.
  15. Look like good creek lures.
  16. I wasn't able to fish, had to help my son change out a water pump. Not much snow, most melted quickly. 30 mins South of St Louis. Never mind the thing that looks like a Cedar Strip canoe in the making. That is for another thread. I'm not trying to hijack.
  17. This is some really good stuff. I've had it a bunch of times, now it's just a staple.
  18. I'll be braving the elements, but working on my son's truck.
  19. Wonder if it was one of the first to be named.
  20. Those look great. Good to see you posting again.
  21. All good ideas, my dad always told me to define and isolate the source. But, that being said, I have additional questions. I wonder is the smoker has cycles on and off, instantly. If it does, it may not be suitable for a GFCI circuit. If you read up on their uses, they are not recommended for refrigerators, due to cycle duties. Refrigerators often trip GFCI circuits and when that happens food gets ruined. Washing machines can also trip them due to the duty cycling. The power draw is strong st first, mimicking an electrical shock or surge and tripping the circuit. The smoker's thermostat may be turning the power draw quickly demanding power, throwing the circuit. So, if that is the issue, ther is really nothing wrong, just using the smoker in the wrong circuit to begin with. Oh, and don't connect 20amp receptacles to 15amp circuits. Your family is worth alot more than paying an electrician.
  22. Guilty.
  23. No, not really. It is manageable, but not light. I drag it. I can stand it up, lean it on the van, lift the back to load it.
