Here's something I've noticed that I think will help you in that situation.... A shorter/heavier sinking section will get the fly deeper and allow you to keep it there. Down to 5-6 ft anyway (which is plenty deep enough). Rio has a 7.5' leader with a 7.0 sink rate and that sucker is a bomb, but isn't hard at all to throw. Having a sink tip twice that length just invites the current to push/pull it around, keeping it from getting down where you want it. Guys think that the longer the sinking portion is....the deeper it will go, and in stillwater that's probably true. But when casting around and over current seams you have way more control with a shorter sinking head.

If you're targeting big ones, I'm a firm believer that fatter is better than longer. I hate the term "pushing water" but I can't deny that flys that have a fatter footprint catch bigger fish, with more regularity, than long snakes of trailing material.

You guys just ain't doing it right, is all I know to say. Hell, I can get a streamer as deep as your jerkbait will run using a 7' RIO 5.3 IPS sinking leader. I do it all the time! Picks up fine and casts like a dream. And I can do it all day long. The days of hucking 15-30' sinking heads are long gone. I mean yeah, they still exist, but they have no useful purpose for trout (or anything else) in Mo. Ok. Tn. or Ar.

You actually want to dodge my double-hauls all day? Glutton for punishment. 😄

Wanna fish a derby with me in the sleet and freezing rain this coming Tuesday.....if Amber pusses out? (cuz I bet when she sees the forecast she will suddenly have an important meeting that absolutely can't be missed). 😄
-
Challenge accepted 👍 You obviously need me in the boat with you.... Spankin' yerass. 😊 Winner buys dinner. 😋
-
Oh baloney! An average caster can shoot 20' without a single false cast. Allow for just one false cast and the fly is on the water, back on target, while you're still fumbling with the bail...or slapping your jerkbait on the surface to get the weeds off of it. 😎 You know darn well that you're only fishing the first 10-15ft. of every cast anyway.

Craziest thing I've ever heard. I flyfish from a boat alot. Nobody "rows". 🤔
-
I did get a little more excited about seeing the mailman than I usually do. Maybe I should be concerned. 🤪 As long as I stay away from wine coolers and Michelob Ultra ....and keep driving Chevy's and running Evinrude's....I think I can remain straight. Ya never know though.
-
Quicker to pick it up and lay it back down, than it is to reel it back in, flip the bail, cast it out, crank it down, and begin another retrieve.
-
Too late, I've slept it off now. Catch me next time. 😄

I am of the mindset that if TROUT are your target, then there's nothing that a plastic jerkbait can do that a big articulated streamer on a sink-tip can't do better.

I attempted to correct an MDC agent that the fish he was calling carp were indeed Buffalo. I was unsuccessful in convincing him, he blew me off as though I was an idiot.
-
In all seriousness have you talked with anyone at MDC about these mutts? Yes I have. Twice. They pretended to be interested, and acknowledged the negative possibilities. There are only 3 states where it is being done.

Getting Some Carp For Eating
fishinwrench replied to oneshot 1's topic in Carp, the Other White Meat
Well then why did you stop? 🤔 -
And then you have this guy, probably a lurking member here, that doesn't eat Hybrids, but regularly collects them by the cooler full.....to feed to his GD cats! It's great that we can all help fund his cat food through the MDC. 🙄

I haven't done much of it myself but I had a buddy that was a master at it. He always used what I think is the largest floating Rapala made (5-6"). Suspending baits were not his choice at all, he hated them. He used a medium spinning rig with 12# line. Dude could put on a clinic with that setup.

OA One Bass Tournament (Virtual Version) #3

OMG, you're gonna stomp me with that one if you get close to a biggun. If I get two 4 pounders can I beat the 6 pounder that you're gonna catch with that thing? 😳 -
You are welcome. Thanks for caring enough to do your own fact checking. 👍 Several years back I started catching fish that weren't exactly white bass....and weren't exactly Hybrid Stripers. It wasn't blatently obvious but I knew I wasn't imagining things. Also noticed right away that those "mutts" weren't near as hearty as the regular White bass (died easily, and almost seemed to have a heart attack when handled). I've caught enough of them to know that we don't need them polluting the gene pool. They serve no useful purpose, and are probably going to be detrimental to the health of native White bass.....so WHY CONTINUE TO DO IT ?

Seems to have been a passing fad around here. 4-6 years ago a bunch of guys (and gals) were big into it. They've all sold their bowfishing rigs now and have gone back to rod/reel fishing. I've only had one bowfishing rig brought to the shop this year, and it was a pair of guys from Booneville. Never see them out over the flats at night anymore either. Several years ago there would be 2-4 out there every single night. Still tons of gar and buffalo cruising the flats. I thought for awhile that they had really decimated the population....but they certainly didn't.

Eww! 🤮 Ruined myself early in life on that stuff. At 14 years old I stole 2 bottles of Cold Duck champagne from my parents liquor cabinet. Went off into the woods and got shitfaced on a SCHOOL NIGHT. Crept quietly back into the house and grabbed the only QUIET thing I could find to eat on the way to my bedroom....a big hunk of banana bread. Sat on the edge of my bed and devoured the whole thing....and passed out. Woke up 2 hours later, on the verge of heaving my guts out. Hung my head out my bedroom window and puked about 16 times. The next thing I remember, my dad is pounding on my bedroom door telling me it's time to get up and get ready for school. I told him I was sick as hell, he took one look at me and started reaming myass for smoking dope. I admitted to smoking dope, even though I hadn't been..... because if he had known I stole liquor from the house he would have BillyJack kicked me upside the head. He let me stay home from school, but he gave me a LARGE list of things that had better be done....and done right.... before he got home from work. I've never been able to eat banana bread since. I don't even like to see or smell it.
