I picked a two person mess of green beans this morning - first this year. Diced and browned two pieces of bacon. Coarse chopped half a candy red onion. Simmering now, Supper will be okay we hope.
My mother is in much the same shape. It's not much fun to watch.
The only thing we can do is take it as a cautionary tale and live the best lives we can.
We split a prime ribeye and a large sweet potato. Avocado and fresh brandywine slices for a salad. And now we are working on killing a jar of the amish dills we put up a few days back.. They turned out!
Moderation in all things is what my grandmother taught me. Pretty good advice.
Safe travels, high tides, fair winds, and many many bites Mr. Folly. Fare well, pilgrim.
It's Riveryard here right now. We are welll up on a hillside with a place in the lower yard that drains a pasture above me. It's running about six inches deep.
So far we've put up six pints of Amish (sweet) dills and nine pints of bread and butter pickles. And the pickling cucumber avalanche is just starting. Next up will be some hot dill spears. And soon enough, the tomato avalanche will start too. Go long in Ball Jar is my hot stock tip of the day.
I am here to tell you there is a world between broccoli that goes in the steamer five minutes after being cut, done tender crisp with some real butter melted over it versus anything that comes from the store. Sorry it's over for this summer. It's so good I will do my best to get a fall crop.
You guys kind of remind me of an old quail hunter from my younger years - when there were still quail. His saying was "Signs fine, but it don't cook up worth a darn." Only he didn't say darn.
I may have seriously overestimated the need for 14 tomato plants to feed the two of us and have some to can. They are going crazy. We'll wind up putting up whole tomatoes, tomato juice, salsa and spaghetti sauce. Going to eat the last of the broccoli later tonight. Didn't think I could ever get tired of asparagus but I did. Same way with wilted salad. First two rows of sweet corn are tasseled out now. Next two rows are a bit over knee high. Pole beans have bloomed and are setting on. A row of bush beans is about two weeks behind. Bell and jalapenos are setting on too. Canned six pints of pickles yesterday. More to come for certain. Nice to have a real garden again.
