  1. Don't know how I'd get by without a little help from my friends...
  2. You guys must have found good ones, congratulations.
  3. That's good stuff right there.
  4. That's been my experience with stripers, especially the bigger ones (>15lb). I found a pattern where I could catch them from the bank in the fall when the creek arm temps were 48-52. Did it for 10 years straight. At the time, I rarely caught one under 12-13lbs. I always horsed them in, as having one zooming back and forth in the skinny water they were in spooked the others, and that was it for the evening. The bigger ones just wouldn't be horsed though, and despite my best efforts it was often a 3-5 minute fight. Those fish were wore out when landed, so much so that I'd put them on a long cord stringer to see if they'd come around. A few did, and headed for the next county when released, but many of them went belly up in 20-30 minutes. These fish weren't gut or gill hooked either, they'd just given their all. The study I linked above noted the buildup of lactic acid during prolonged fights, sometimes fatal. I believe it. My feeling now is that if you hang one that spools you a time or two, it's unlikely to live if released.

  6. Couple of guys you might run in to at a railway station near you;
  7. OK, I posted that in jest, but the principle works. Back when I was prone to such things, I taped some handles and a hood to a 5' stick of 6" round duct. 5' let you be secure in a seat or on your knees. The key was shutting off all external light, hence the hood. Used it to retrieve a rod once, saw some fish, it works. Then again, so do oars...
  8. A neighbor when I was a kid threw out her shrooms soaking water in her yard and they took after a couple years
  9. With water clarity like that, who needs a Livescope. A $25 Aquascope might be the ticket...
  10. I never could find any correlation between moon phase and fish activity, and lord knows I tried. Weather and lake/river conditions always seemed to override. However, when night fishing, the light from a full or near-full moon has a huge effect, especially on a partly cloudy night. When the moon popped out from behind a cloud and you could suddenly see your surroundings, the bite was on for a bit. Same thing when it disappeared behind a cloud, you had a few minutes of hot bite. This was for walleye, flatheads, and the occasional stinkin' bass by-catch. Crepescular fish capitalize on rapidly changing light conditions, not only at twilight.
  11. I think this is the first tune I remember. Still have a thing for Glen Miller occasionally.
  12. I carried the gunny sack for the adults when I was a kid. It was the Chariton river in north Mo, so it was mostly 5-6 lbers with a rare 10 thrown in. Draggin' the sack wasn't that much fun, but the community fish fries afterwards were awesome. And I learned where they nested, which came in handy years later.
  13. Sounds like the makings for a new episode of Naked & Afraid. Give 'em a call. You won't get rich off reality show money, but you'd be famous with a fat wallet.

  19. Slipped in a Stevie Winwood cd this morning;
  20. Good to know, thanks.. But if I could do that with a picture on the web, I'd probably be licking something other than rocks... 🙂
  21. I'll go with that. Hadn't considered the effects of working it.
  22. I used to be proficient in Missouri rocks. Without holding it in my hand, I'd call it chert, possibly Mozarkite. One pic shows a semi-gloss you don't see on granite. If Mozarkite, it's "local".
  23. Cool! Lots of good striper/flathead bait there.
  24. That's the most disturbing image I've seen in a long time. Just give 'em some stubby froglegs and a movie set. Godzilla retires.
