Congrats on a successful night and follow up trip today! Glad that your buddy caught a really nice rainbow. Not a bad PB on your first trout fishing trip☺! Can't wait to see what you catch tonight.

Good find Dan! I found some unripe ones last weekend. Have to get back out hunting the creek bottoms hoping to smell some Ozark "bananas". -
Looks like you were fishing 600 lb test line on that 16" cramkbait☺! Congrats on that monster.

I've got a big meeting on Monday, but would love to get down to Crane this fall or winter. Can't wait for your report.

The adipose fin is a small fatty fin behind the dorsal fin and just in front of the tail.. Should be right around where your hand was in the photo. Triploid fish are fish that have three sets of chromosomes instead of the normal two sets in a diploid fish. Because of that they are or tend to be sterile. Since they do not often try to spawn, more of their energy goes into body size and they grow bigger and faster than the normal diploid fish. Fisheries departments will release triploids for a given purpose. Triploid grass carp are realeased for their ability to eat the weeds of a pond or lake. Because they are triploids they themselves should not overpopulate and overeat all of the vegetation. Triploid browns are released to grow large and provide trophy quality fish in a shorter period of time. Phil Lilly can provide more information about these browns in Taneycomo. This topic has been discussed a few times before on this site.

(Update w/pics) Topwaters for Stream Smallmouth
Johnsfolly replied to TroutRinger's topic in Smallmouth Talk
I always seem to have a lot of different baits with me but really end up fishing just a few. I got into using a whopper plopper last year. Easy to use and got it crushed a lot. Will keep a few in the tackle bag. Still my favorite top water are WTD baits and use the Spit-n-image the most. Not sure that they even make that bait anymore. I like that the tail drops when you stop the cadence. Sometimes gets the bass triggered when that tail drops. After that I enjoy fishing a fluke. Running fast at the surface is fun. Then let it die and just get inhaled. The Ned works great as well. A few of the creeks that I fish have the best bite from 10 to 2 pm. -
Great job night fishing Taney! That's a really nice brown! Did you see if it had an adipose fin? Looks like it may be a triploid by its coloration and I believe that their adipose fins have been clipped. What were you guys fishing out of?

A few smallmouth flies
Johnsfolly replied to Flysmallie's topic in Fly Tying Discussions & Entymology
I think that there are a couple there that I would eat if given the chance! Hopefully you get the chance to throw them at some smallmouth. -
See that BH has tried to hijack this small game thread☺! No more dove talk! And no teal talk next eeek either! Now let's help Tho1mas with his problem. I have done both of those methods and found the same as you have that squirrels unlike rabbits just don't like to be skinned☺. So don't really have a faster way to get that done. I do wet them down before I skin them and that does minimize the hair on the meat IMO. I do wish that I lived closer to be able to help thin your population☺.

GRA-Bass Photos (gratuitous bass photos)
Johnsfolly replied to Johnsfolly's topic in General Angling Discussion
JHK - Thanks for posting that Taney smallmouth photo. Also glad that you got a white bass photo from that trip. That was a great multispecies trip. Who would have thought that we would have caught so many different species on a night trip to Taneycomo! I caught walleye, that smallmouth, a green sunfish!, rainbow trout, that big white sucker, and white bass. No browns. So a return trip is in order! -
GRA-Bass Photos (gratuitous bass photos)

I hope that there are a few in our future☺! I'm pretty certain that there will be another Taney trip!. We didnt take any photos of they white bass that we caught. -
Yes please send me his information. Sue gets them by the 5 to 6 lb bag from the Amish. Doesn't hurt to have additional sources. Do you think that you could keep them fresh longer with vacuum sealed batches?

I will have to admit that other than squab, no dove has passed my lips. Always hear about dove tasting like liver. You know me always willing to try something new☺.

Dan - great to see you getting out on the water with you grandson. Looks like he is taking after his grandfather with those jigging spoons!

With fall in the air I wanted a bit of apple for yesterday's breakfast, but we had eaten them all. I opted for opening a can of our preserved peaches. I diced a couple of peach halves and toasted diced walnuts. Livie made a buttermilk pancake batter. We also added nutmeg and cinnamon to the mix to bring in those warm autumn spices. Mixed in the walnuts and peaches. The walnuts ended up a little bitter. I would have use pecans if we had any in the house. The maple syrup did counterbalance the slight bitterness of the walnuts.

On Saturday while in St Louis I looked up a couple of the Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives locations. There were three that were fairly close to the Botanical Gardens, a gastro pub, an Asian fusion restaurant and a barbeque spot. We decided on checking out The Shaved Duck (the BBQ spot). You could tell immediately that this was a BBQ place with the smell of the smoke filling the small dining area. There was evidence of Guy Fieri's visit that included poster and a air-brushed Fieri head logo painted on the wall. As we were sitting the chef came out with a large butcher block tray of assorted smoked meats and ribs for a party of 10. It looked and smelled fantastic. We all ordered apps and small meals and split all of them between the six of us. We got and order of their jalapeno and duck chili topped on mac and cheese, just a bowl of the same chili, candied bacon with walnuts, and skillet cornbread for apps. A 1/3 slab of baby back ribs, a smoked meat sampler with pulled pork and smoked meatloaf, and a couple of wedge salads Definitely worth going back!

Ness - I'm very partial to Bushmills. I haven't had their Red. used to get Bushmills Black which may have been aged in port wine barrels. While we were at the Japanese Festival in the MO Botanical garden on Saturday, I got reacquainted to Japanese beer! The also had a decent locally brewed Sake. We had Tako Yaki (octopus puffs), chicken Yakatori, tempura shrimp sushi roll, smoked salmon and avocado sushi roll, and a lobster spring roll. All were very good.

Yes I am fighting getting glasses. So the rifle will sit until the leaves start dropping. I ended up shooting at seven, missed the one, and lost one. Better ratio than some dove hunts and more and better tasting meat!

Great river walleye! Great job HW.

I struck out yesterday on catching a new species. I had small minnows that I haven't caught before on my bait but no hookups. So i had the urge to get onto some game. Still haven't decided to go after doves. Instead went out to get on the bushytails still hitting the hickory nuts. Started down a finger of hatdwoods and heard some cutting ahead. Saw a few squirrels ahead of me but out of range. I could hear ine or two to my right. I gor a bead on a couple in an oak. Shot the trailing squirrel. Waited a little while to see if the other would give me a shot. Nope. Crossed the drainage and picked up this guy. Had two more going back into the hickory trees. One stopped to cut the nut but I don't want to shoot them when they are sitting. Too much damage with the pellets. Got the bead on a second one in a cherry tree to my left. Dropped that one. I chased after some high squealers. Snuck up on another in the hickory tops. Shot it through the brush but must have missed as he ran off onto private property. I got into more heavy timber and could not find an intermittent cutter. Sat diwn and submitted the first post as two chased each other down a large oak 30 yards from me. With my game muffs I heard some squealing in the distance. Closed the gap and saw a couple chasing around a large dead tree. I shot one, then another and then a third. I found two out of the three. The last one either crawled or ended up in the thick brush and wood from the dead tree. In the 15 to 20 min that I looked for that third one the last man standing was still chasing the female in the trees above me. I thought a couple of times about shooting one or the other. Instead let them go off to make more squirrels!

Let's hear it for the small game hunting this season. The upland and waterfowl guys will try to monopolize the hunting threads until deer and turkey seasons. This thread isnt for those just sitting on buckets or comfy sports chairs☺! This is about spot and stalk squirrels. Creeping up on cutters. Belly crawling for bunnies. OK Nobody is likely to belly crawl for bunnies. Busting brushpiles for bunnies☺! So let's hear about these hunts. If you hunt from a recliner that's ok too☺! Actually just missed an opprtunity at two while submittng this post.

You know it is all about the LIST☺! Keep lists for lots of things! Ask JestersHK about my list obsession! If you have Excel I'll send you a fish life list file that I have prepared. Just scroll down the list of species and fill in the date and location that you caught your first one☺.
