    What's Cooking?

I found Opies pickled walnuts on a british food website Jollygrub.com and also on Amazon. I can't copy the description with my phone to post here. They sound interesting.
  2. Norm Sorry to hear about your diagnosis. Good luck and god bless on your treatment.
  3. Pole and line record is 20 lbs 8 oz. Caught in the Osage in 1986.
  4. That's a great deer. Has quite a bit of antler mass. Congrats. No luck for me yet this year. Had deer jump the string and the latest was a deflection that saved that deer. Haven't seen any bicks like yours running around my hunting area. Have only been out a few times due to the hot weather.
  5. This is when most of the deer are harvested. So they would have the greatest amount of potential samples and likely to be over all of the counties within the CWD containment zones. Also because of focusing on the small window like the opening weekend, they don't have to have staffing at all locations to cover days when few if any deer would be brought in for sampling. After that time its on a volunteer basis for the hunter to contact the agents to set up the sampling.
  6. You scooped me on this one. I hadn't had a chance to upload the MDC announcement about this record fish. Glad to see that I'm not the only one interested in these records.
  7. OTF I understand what you are going through. I still often reminisce about the hunts that I made when I first started hunting in Pennsylvania. I didn't grow up hunting and didn't start until I was 22 years old and didn't shoot my first deer until the next year, but I can remember that first successful hunt. I was up in a small tree overlooking a small creek coming our of a blueberry swamp. I didn't have on a safety harness (don't even know if at that time there really were many harnesses available) but I wanted to get above the blueberry bushes for a possible shot. Up to this point I had only shot small game and after nearly 5 days of hiking all over this public land and seeing does, but no bucks (was bucks only at that time) I was uncertain how I would do if and when a legal deer presented a shot. Sure enough an 8 point buck came down along that creek and the predator took over and the shot rang out. Even after 27 years I can picture that event. I hunted four more season in PA and then moved to Florida, where I have never hunted even after living there for 6 years. The thought of hunting on foot in 80+ degree weather in swamps with every know venomous critter and alligators never appealed to me. The first couple of years, my wife and I would return to PA to hunt. But that got more and more expensive and too much of a time commitment. Now the deer where never as large as the ones that I frequently see nor were any of the other game more abundant in PA as they are here in the Midwest. However, I still have thoughts of going back to that swamp to hunt deer or bear. I have the map of that state land on the wall of my office. If nothing more than to look over and think what if. If I were to leave Missouri, I would reminisce about many hunts and fishing trips including those that I have posted about on this site. It is those experiences that makes who we are. I feel a richer person for experiencing them and I am sure that you do as well as you think on the those that you described in your post(s). I am living proof that I am currently not harming any animals with my bow thus far. Good luck this weekend, on your move, and on those new experiences that you will soon encounter.
  8. I don't have a problem with a coyote going after deer, but have never seen that myself. I know it happens and like Mitch stated they do often eat the deer while the animal is still alive. Again I have no problem with that situation. May seem cruel to us, but to the predator there is no reason to expend additional energy to kill the it when the animal is subdued. My issue and this I have seem first hand on at least three separate occasions are dogs chasing deer on public lands. Although my wife and I benefitted on one of those hunts by harvesting one of the chased deer on a managed hunt, I don't like seeing these animals be hounded by domestic dogs. They seem to chase them to exhaustion, but don't outright kill the deer.
  9. Here is what is currently on the MDC website for regulations on Hickory Creek. Hickory Creek Restrictions: The use of porous-soled waders is prohibited. While on any waters with length limits, all trout you possess must be kept with head, tail, and skin intact. Only flies and artificial lures may be used, and soft plastic baits and natural and scented baits are prohibited when fishing for any species from Nov. 1 through Feb. 28. From Highway 86 bridge to Shoal Creek - 2.7 miles: White Ribbon Trout Area (All): March 1 - Oct. 31 White Ribbon Trout Area (Catch & Release): Nov. 1 - Feb. 28 White Ribbon Trout Area Restrictions: Length Limit: Rainbows -- none; Browns -- at least 15" Daily Limit: 4 Authorized Lures: All White Ribbon Trout Area (Nov 1 - Feb 28) Restrictions: Length Limit: Catch and release only Daily Limit: Catch and release only between November 1 and February 28 Authorized Lures: Artificial lures and flies between November 1 and February 28 White Ribbon Trout Area Coldwater streams capable of supporting trout populations year-round. All receive periodic stockings of rainbow trout, and some also receive brown trout. They provide great opportunities for catching and harvesting trout and the occasional chance to harvest a large trout. White Ribbon Trout Area (Nov 1 - Feb 28) Coldwater streams capable of supporting trout populations year-round. All receive periodic stockings of rainbow trout, and some also receive brown trout. They provide great opportunities for catching and harvesting trout and the occasional chance to harvest a large trout. I have only fished this creek once and it was difficult to catch a trout. The ones still in after the last stocking event ( only saw three confirmed trout) are very spooky. I was able to catch one rainbow and had to deter a snapping turtle by blocking it with my legs to get the fish landed. However, I caught plenty of other species including a large goldfish. So there is a lot of potential in that creek. I would tend to agree with Ollie that the policing of the area is one of the biggest issues. There are always those that that take from our resources without adhering to the laws.
  10. This was a great video! Seemed like a awesome trip. A short segment between strikes to add commentary about techniques / baits or just showing the baits would bring the viewer into your thought process for the fish you are targetting. Keep them coming.
  11. Nice smallmouth and great fall scene! You can't ask for much more! Congrats!
  12. Great job Dan! Sorry that we couldn't fish together in Oct. Good luck in Dec.
  13. Congrats on helping your daughter get her first fly rod trout! That's fantastic!
  14. Congrats to you and the Mrs. Nice looking ducks. Especially the grilled ones!
  15. That last bow looks like its girth is greater than its length. How long was it? Do hou have a weight? They both have great color. Congrats on a couple of great fish.
  16. I would love a month like yours. Congrats and great photos of beautiful trout!
  17. Great looking browns! Nice colorful males. Thanks for the post. Looking for that night time giant. Good luck.
  18. I always thought the same thing until I went and fished Coot and Plover lakes in the James Reed WA last year. The regulations depend upon the lake. The lakes around Columbia are C&R until Feb 1, but the ones around KC and I believe STL are catch an keep right after Nov 1. For example on the MDC website for Coot Lake, which is in James Reed WA out towards KC - there do not appear to be any restrictions for when trout can be kept or for the types of bait or number of rods allowed. Coot Lake Restrictions: Year-round: statewide trout methods and limits. Trout permits are required if trout are kept. Winter Trout Fishing Area Rainbow trout are stocked in the winter beginning in early November. Fishing is permitted year-round during normal park or area hours. Unless indicated in the area rules, trout may be taken by pole and line using all types of lures and baits under statewide limits. A trout permit is required to keep trout. Whereas here in Columbia for Cosmo-Bethel Park trout are C&R through Jan 31st and there are restrictions in the types of baits used until you are able to keep fish. Cosmo-Bethel Lake Restrictions: You must have a trout permit to keep trout during other times of the year. Between November 1 and January 31: Catch and release only for trout. Only flies, artificial lures and unscented soft plastic baits are allowed. In O'Fallon Park in St Louis county again it does not restrict keeping trout after they have been released. The only restrictions are for the number of rods and that chum cannot be used. O'Fallon Park Lake Restrictions: Trout permits are required if trout are kept. Year-round: You must stop fishing for all species after having 4 trout in possession Nov. 1 - Jan. 31: Only 1 pole may be used. Use of chum is prohibited. I know that there are a lot of folks that really hate this program. I enjoy going and fishing in new ponds and lakes and this gives me an excuse to stay closer to home to catch some trout. Do they fight as well as a wild trout, no they don't. However, I can't always get out to the wild trout streams.
  19. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB's). We have run some of the fish and invertebrate testing with these materials. Can affect your thyroid function and is an endocrine disruptive compound. Often the chemicals that were really effective turned out when tested to be fairly toxic to animals and humans. It may be formaldehyde that is my undoing in the long run based upon the thousands of fish and plankton samples that I have processed in grad school. Al - I hope that you find the root cause or at least the latest trigger, possibly the solvents that you are using. I also hope that you are fine painting with the acrylics. Take care of yourself. As much as I enjoy and learn from your posts, I would hate to think about the possibility of not seeing another one of your new paintings. Though the next stream painting could use a few more darters . Mitch - congrats on the weight loss and good luck on getting your sugar levels in line.
  20. Here is what we came up with yesterday.
  21. Sung by Louden Wainright III. I love that song. Even my kids know some of the lyrics. "Out on the highway late last Night. He should have looked left and he should have looked right. Didn't see the station wagon car. The skunk got squashed so there you are. Dead skunk in the middle of the road." My favorite line was "You don't have to look and you don't have to see. You can feel it in your olfactory!"
  22. I hope that everyone and your kids had a safe Halloween this year. I wish that I could say that this is our decoration, but it's our neighbors. Seems appropriate for this site. This guy is definitely a trophy fisherman. No meat on that fish !
  23. You got a chance to get out with your son. That's great! Good luck if you take him out for the general season or the late Youth season.
  24. Ham Great report. Loved the photos. I never got to fish much with my dad. He liked to golf instead. Today would have been his 76th birthday. I hope to get to your dad's age and one of my kids takes me fishing. Even if it is only for a few hours.
