  1. Thanks guys for the info, and I'd love to see some more setups too. I'll have to get some pics of our planters, I am hoping to keep them on our deck out back elevated, and away from the plethora of rabbits we have back there. Working on the drain system now, and trying to figure it all out.
  2. I'm going to try some in the bags like that Ness, thanks for that. We both are really looking forward to getting into this, her more than me, but growing your own food is a great skill that everyone should have and we are going to make sure our kiddos are doing this with us too. This all started with our 10yr old wanting to grow her own potatoes after seeing a clip from the "Martian" movie. Mom should have plenty of idle hands to help her out. Especially with the fertilizer LOL
  3. Growing garden destroyers in your garden huh Ness? That's a new tactic for sure Thanks for the input BH, wife can hopefully find her green thumb, and we'll see where this goes. After researching and this thread here we are going to start some of the veggies now, especially the peppers... color me not smart lol, but I never realized it took over 70 days for a pepper to grow... The learning has begun!
  4. Glad I found this thread, I am building some planter boxes now for my wife as she has decided to try her hand at this gardening thing. I know just the basics from my younger days on a farm, but is there any good reading material that can help us newbies out? She's wanting to mainly grow peppers, squash, zucchini, and maybe a few other items. Planters will be 8Lx3Wx1D I'm hoping this is deep enough?
  5. Man this thread is awesome. Father of 3 girls here ages 4, 7, and soon to be 11 going on 18... Glad its not just me, but I am trying to enjoy every moment I can with them as I know that they will be gown up soon. I too now understand why getting smacked in the head with a wooden spoon by mom for rolling my eyes at her was just a way of saying she loved me LOL. I did luck out and get one that loves to fish. My oldest is turning out to be quite the fisherman, the middle one is the animal lover who asks me how I'd like it if someone poked a hole in my face and then threw me back in the river when I get home from fishing LOL. My little tornado I just think man I should tie a bunch of lures on her arms and just let her go jump in the stream. My oldest last year at kids day at Bennett Springs
  6. I've chased the big browns at Taneycomo these past 2 winters, but have yet to land one. I hooked into something big one night down by the dam which I'm sure would of been my personal best, but never got to see it. Biggest fish I've personally seen caught out of Bennett was about a 4lb rainbow. I've heard the stories of years past, but I'm still a trout noob going into my 4th season.
  7. That's really cool, and I hope we see some more often. I didn't realize they even had then in the hatchery for river stocking and just assumed they only raised rainbows there. Thanks for the info.
  8. So heard there's a bunch of browns in the stream from one of my buddies and also from Weaver's article. Never caught any browns at Bennet before, but did they used to stock them regularly and then stop?
  9. Thanks for the report, glad you guys were able to get out and wade a bit. Is Outlet 1 still filled in with sand? Last month we were there and it was a sand pit and didn't see a single fish where they usually stack up in there.
  10. Looks like you guys really got into them. Thanks for the report, and nice job!
  11. Beautiful fish, and good article. Thanks for sharing Phil.
  12. A Midnight Clear is an outstanding book Quill! Been a while since I read it as well. And I have read most of McCarthys stuff, not a huge western reader, but he nails it most of the time.
  13. I've been on a post-apocalyptic binge for the past 6 months or so. I by no means consider myself a dooms day prepper, but the wife and I do have a plan if things ever took a turn for the worse. The following books will really open your eyes on just how quick things can go south. They also gave me some great ideas on how to manage in a world where we take so much for granted on a daily basis. Not the happiest of subject matters and some very dark books, but I've even had my wife read through a few of these just so she 'gets' it... The Borrowed World by Franklin Horton - A mans journey back to his family after hes stranded on a business trip during a crisis Ashes of the Unspeakable by Franklin Horton - The follow up and book 2 of the trilogy, read them back to back and waiting for book 3 Lights Out by David Crawford - A small communities journey of survival after a EMP changes the US forever One Second After by William Forstchen - Similar to Lights out but on a smaller family scale. EMP attack, very dark book One Year After by William Forstchen - Follow up book not as good more on post apocalyptic warfare and politics The Road by Cormac McCarthy - A father and son survive in post apocalyptic future, also a very dark book Also read the following sprinkled in which were good reads and gave me a break from the gloom and doom The Martian by Andy Weir - Have yet to watch the movie but the book was fantastic and couldnt put it down The Wayward Pines Trilogy by Blake Crouch - The TV show was horrible compared to the books... American Sniper by Chris Kyle - Great read, and a pretty decent movie too. The Revenant by Michael Punke - Great read and good movie Started the Wheel of Time series now, but just not that into it... Thats all for now.
  14. Yeah we jig fished right at the mouth of Turkey, but didn't catch any. Glad you were able to catch a few.
  15. Phil, was that a gopro used for the underwater vid? Fish are definitely chunky!
  16. We fished all day Saturday wading up by the cable all the way down past the 3rd outlet. Wading was tough fishing for us. We caught a dozen trout on Saturday using spinning gear, along with some bass, drum and a carp. You will need to really chuck it out there into the channel and really work the bottom. Saw very few guys on fly rods actually landing fish from the banks. I would definitely recommend the boat if you have access to it. The outlets and usual spots were either filled in with sand or just washed out altogether. Outlet 1 was the big shocker. Almost always you see fish up there, and they were nowhere to be seen...
  17. I just got a Hero+ for xmas. As others have stated low light, no zoom, and having trouble picking up sound thats not right next to it make its use kind of limited. I will say for outdoor kids activity they are great. Sledding is awesome! Sometime I just strap mine on my 4yr old and let her run around. Trying to find a way to strap it on my dog as well. My wife bought mine for me as a gift knowing I would never spend the money on one just for myself, but so far I am very happy with it, and always finding or thinking of new ways to use it.
  18. It's definitely been a quality over quantity type of day. Landed 6 trout to hand. I think Brandon is at the same. All bows, about a 2lb striper, a drum, and a itty bitty bass. All on jigs, bigger ones were caught on 1/8oz grey, and gray and red bouncing off the bottom...
  19. Made it down late tonight with fmcbrandon. Fished for a few hours. Looks like they were still running 7k cfs... Laker you weren't lying lol, we saw one rainbow, that was about it. Hole one is a giant sand pit... Brandon hooked a carp on a jig, and I caught a weird looking drum I think, We'll try to get some pics up in the morning before we head back out.
  20. Thanks for the report. I've been wanting to fish there for a while, but never really figured out how or where was the best place to park and put in...
  21. Thanks for the report Bill. is TR that close where you think they will start shutting off or slowing down? I'm assuming they are still running 4 units?
  22. Goodluck Gotmuddy! Would love to see some pics. Reds are awesome, I'll be chasing some in June and July again this year. Have you landed one on a fly rod yet? Thats on my list for this year to do.
  23. Not allot of love for the horses jolicious so consider yourself warned. As for the river scene pretty sure that was hollywood add on. If it was in the book it was nowhere near that drawn out. Need to go back and re-read for sure. I definitely recommend the book, Michael Punke did a great job with it. Its a pretty quick read as well.
  24. Book was better as is usually the case. From a pure cinematography perspective I haven't seen better in a long time. Filmed the whole movie in natural light... Hollywood added their take on a few things where it strayed from the book (also based loosely on Hugh Glass' life) which I thought was unnecessary... Overall worth seeing in the theater for me. It is graphic, and sometimes brutal, which I enjoyed a realistic depiction, but the wife squirmed a bit at a few scenes. Tom Hardy stole the show as Fitzgerald imo.
  25. Nice job and thanks for sharing Phil! How long do you think this Shad run will last? Looks like there will be some chunkers around for a while if anything... Some nice fish indeed.
