Was a lot different in those days as he worked pretty much every off season. Met Mike Shannon at the grand opening of Dugal's Big Star grocery store one year. Even the star players picked up extra income in those days. Worst part were the years he left mid-February and we didn't go where he was playing for the summer for whatever reason. One year he was with the Charleston, West Virginia team in the AAA international League. They were trying a new idea out-playing some games in Havana, Cuba for a trial run. One of the first nights there, they heard a loud explosion followed by a big cloud of smoke. They stopped the game and then he said the guys in the bullpen all made a mad dash to the dugout. Somebody had tried to blow up a nearby train station and the Castro led guerillas had followed a suspect into the baseball stadium. That was the end of that experiment.

Guess I could fill a page with memories from my Dad being a professional baseball player. Never was famous as the knuckleball he threw according to catchers like Tim McCarver and Bob Uecker was very difficult to corral. We always came home to Desloge after spending the summer in some bigger cities when he was in the majors. Met Stan Musial in 1962 when Dad was a relief pitcher for the original Colt 45's. Batted off Hank Aaron in the father-son game in Milwaukee in 1964. Came up to bat in the first inning with 2 outs and smoked one down the line for a sliding double. Older brother not wanting to look bad muscled up and hit a pop fly in the infield for the 3rd out. Often wonder what he might have done with a catcher like Molina. Probably the best memory was that thru all the ups and downs, he was always the same old country boy who couldn't wait to get home to hunt, fish and play basketball with us kids. He died in 2000 from several bouts for cancer over a 5 year period . He was inducted into the International League baseball Hall of Fame in 2008.

She has a electric blanket that plugs in the car and leaves the motor running if it's too cold. Windchill at the motel in Lebanon Saturday said 13 degrees so I even waited for the temperature to warm a little before I fished. That stocking cap fooled me the last time we all fished at Bennett. That plus you had ventured downstream. The last time we switched rods so I could retie tippet and fly, she decided she really like that little rod of mine that you were looking at that day. She broke out that little St. Croix 6 foot 3 wt. Saturday and gave them heck in the outlet. Might be a while before the water gets decent in the parks. Winter season may be over by then.

Wife, Susie and I made a quick trip to Bennett to fish Friday and Saturday this week. Must be getting older as the 42 degrees showing on our car seemed a lot colder especially with that wind. Caught decent numbers of fish in zones 1 and 2 with several from 15-18". Started to the outlet in zone 2 Friday just to see how busy it was and would've been fishable except for the one guy standing midstream casting up into the outlet. Probably took up 30' of water with his back cast . Evidently, Laker had the same scenario at Taneycomo in the outlets. Moved on and found fish down to the "Whistle Bridge" in decent numbers. Egg patterns worked well as did the usual scud patterns when we did venture into the outlet on Saturday. Overall it was a good trip and chance to get out and wet a line.

Now if you could get the aroma added to the cooking on the "wok", it would really be awesome.

Didn't mean any harm as I always look to see what you've posted on the Forum. Having a wife who survived cancer twice and losing my Dad at an early age, I'm hoping and praying for you and your family. Had a railroad buddy who had a lot of experiences and told him he could sell a lot of books retelling his life. He said it would have to be listed as fiction. Keep fighting and keep the posts coming.

Sounds like the makings of a reality show or at least a memoir "The Life and Times of Oneshot"!

Happy Birthday Sandy! We spend several days celebrating Susie's birthday each year fishing. ( And mine also).

My 91 year old uncle passed away from Covid a couple weeks ago. Tough ,old guy who survived better than 2 years in a Korean POW camp and went on to live a pretty good life. Was sad for all that he survived that "hell" only to die of the coronavirus.

Susie and I were using the gray scud in the outlet and did stay and fish the second day at BSSP. Away from the outlet it was mostly fur bugs in "egg " or some shade of salmon. Wrench, think I might have talked to you along the bank of the High Bank hole. It's tough wading that stretch for me also with the bad right hip. The last time we fished that section, I realized I needed to put some studs on my old pair of Simms or get out the Frankenstein "tractors" I got on closeout. They are heavier than the Simms, but those aluminum bars do a great job on the slick rocks. Had a great time seeing and fishing with everybody even if I didn't recognize Sandy at first. The sock cap throwed me and not seeing Laker fishing close by didn't help.

Not sure I want to ask about that "out front in the garden" part.

Mother in law lived with us for 10 and 1/2 years after she had a stroke. Told her it was the longest 20 years of my life. She actually laughed!

An apple pie, a pizza ,2 high dollar fly rods and reels as we left Montauk and drove the gravel road just pass the bridge to hit the back road to Hwy.63. Something kind of made a bouncing sound and we both realized that the rods were on top of the Explorer.

My wife and I fly fish quite a bit and love to travel to pursue our hobby. This past weekend was probably one of our most enjoyable trips ever. It wasn't a trip to a remote stream, but a couple hours of fishing Roaring River with our 4 youngest grandkids. They range in ages from 3-7 with 3 boys and a girl in the mix. We bought them all youth tags and found an area in the C&R that allowed us enough room to enjoy "fishing" without hopefully spoiling the day for anyone else. We had fish on consistently and would hand the fly rods to the grandkids to fight. The youngest grandson, Oliver, just turned 3 but is strong enough to hold the rod and reel the fish in. He had found a play net at the cabin we had rented and netted 3-4 fish too! I believe Susie and I enjoyed that fishing trip more than any we've ever been on.

Don't let her call Susie, or I'm in trouble

Ness, he finally started giving Sandy his best flies instead of those 2nd's he was passing off to her!

I knew Miss Sandy has been sandbagging on us all these years!

You're correct on that and with 3 sets of keys I spent half the time trying to figure out where my car was. It was in zone 2 for a while and disappeared to later me seeing it parked in zone 1.

Group of five or so were fishing BSSP one year on the opener. As buddy and I started to leave to go to the motel, the local female agent at the time decided to pull us over. "What's the problem Ma'am?" I think you have caught over your limit and would like to inspect your cooler. I said , let's give it a look see and go from there. Said we have 2 more of your group stopped at the lower end of the Park . Lady had run my car license and knew my name etc. I hadn't caught anything worth keeping and buddy had kept one fish and had the fish frozen with the correct I.D. Lady said there been people in and out of your car all day. Yes, as there are 3 sets of keys to my Bronco and some cold refreshments in the cooler. No fish and 2 warm beers later and we were off to the motel with no "I'm sorry" or anything. Other agent went to our motel unit and talked with the owner with his concerns. Terry G. said no problem, I know these boys and they won't keep over their limit. Offered to bet the agent a sizable chunk of change. Group of 5 had kept a total of 7 fish in 2 days of fishing.

North Fork of the Skykomish river

Beautiful scenery and water. Spent the summer of '69 in Tacoma and really enjoyed the fishing. Got up in the mountains with the head groundskeeper for the AAA baseball team and had a blast. -
Reminds me of old friend Danny who got in a Porta-Potty one opening day at Roaring River. The only problem was he didn't have his Powell fly rod inside the door when he let the door spring closed. Took the upper 6" off his expensive rod. Got it fixed and a couple years later, his nephew rolled it up in the car door window!

Saw this bad boy today

One of my railroad buddies was on a work train years ago in So. Ill. He was an engineer so his feet rarely touched the ballast, but he got off to talk with this old farmer that had a place North of the snake road. He asked the old timer why he had on knee boots when it was pretty hot . The old timer told him"if you saw the snakes we have around here, you would either get back on the engine or get you some knee boots too! Said he lost livestock every year to snake bites. Only saw a couple while I was working that subdivision and both were dead.
