Boat gas and trolling motor questions.
LarrySTL replied to stuartsx5's topic in Tips & Tricks, Boat Help and Product Review
Wrench knows far more than I do about such things and I would totally accept what he says about there being a max size TM that should be put on a F&S. I had an 18 ft 150 HP standard bass boat with a 24 V 80-something lb TM and while that was generally plenty of power, there were occasional times and situations where I wished I had more TM power. -
Fishing Guides - Making money on tax dollars?
LarrySTL replied to WettinLine's topic in General Angling Discussion
If a guide helping someone catch a stocked fish is bad because tax dollars stocked the fish, is it also bad if the guide is working on a lake built by the Corps with tax dollars ? Is it bad when BPS, or Floyd's Beer Bait and Ammo sells an angler a 12 pack and some lures and suggests how to fish those lures ?. Shell Oil if I buy gas on the way to the fishing spot ? Mo DOT and the Feds when I drive to the lake on a highway built and maintained by tax dollars ? The restaurant two miles from the lake that sells me a sandwich to take in the boat while I fish with the guide for the stocked fish ? BTW what if we turn the stocked fish loose, is that still bad ? Next can we gripe about the farmers paid to not grow as much as they can ? We may not like it, but does that make the farmer a tax cheat ? The billionaire who pays accountants hundreds of thousands of dollars to help him ( hopefully legally) avoid paying more in taxes ? Also I doubt that guides cheat more on their taxes than anyone else who is self-employed in a business that is primarily sales in cash or by personal check. I suspect the original post was intended to stir the pot. Even more so the conflating of the original post to the subject of tax cheating. -
Mineral Fork report (Kingston access) 5-2-15
LarrySTL replied to Smallieguy87's topic in Other Ozark Waters
I drove by it again this weekend to look at signage. Coming from 21 on 47 there is a no parking sign on the right side just before the bridge. on the right side just after crossing the bridge is a sign saying something about access restricted to state employees or something like that ( shoulda written it down..duhhh). Going south on 47 toward 21, there is no sign of any type on the right side before the bridge, and another "state people only" sign on the right side just after the bridge. I couldnt tell if they meant access as in parking on the shoulder ( tho those signs were off the shoulder a ways) or if they mean you can park but can't go walking off the roadway. I should have parked on the southbound side and walked down the way everybody used to and looked at whats what under the bridge. Elsewhere was pretty good last weekend, but I, or it, stunk Saturday in the rain. -

FWIW I went over the 47 bridge this past Saturday a little after 8:00 am on my way elsewhere. I didnt see any no parking signs but I also didnt see any vehicles there. -
I dont know if anyone is interested, but Gander Mountain has a sale on the Curado 200 I ( both left handed and right handed, all gear ratios). Its on their website and in a snail mail circular I just got. Price is $ 154.99 each, plus a $ 25 mail in rebate, $ 25 rebate for each reel. Net price $ 129.99 after the rebate. At BPS and at C its the regular $ 179 each. Also, they will ship it to your choice of store for free for you to pickup. The reels are on sale til May 15; I am not sure how long the free "ship to store" is good for. On another site I am on, these reels get good reviews from some pretty knowledgeable folks. YMMV Larry

And I am trying to decide both where to go, and which of the 3 days. Hmmmmmm

a pretty good day (also posted in Clearwater Lake Forum)

Blueish crawdads would be unbelievable.....except for the tiny fact that there are LOTS of them in Table Rock and that some pics of them were in the Mo Conservation magazine a few years ago. -
If the ned rig ever dies down, maybe I'll start a Manns' StingRay Grub thread. There are probably a few hundred of mine still hanging in the deep cedars in the James arm of TR.

A fast followup on the ice chest live well. I got another catalog from one of the big sporting goods places in the past couple days, I think it was BPS but not for sure. Skimming thru it before it went to the recycle bin, toward the back of it was a kit like we're talking about. It was I believe $ 47 or so which seems way high to me. I suspect the cheapest small bilge pump at WallyWorld or Academy, plus $ 6 or $ 8 of plastic pipe and tubing from HD or Lowes could almost cut that in half. Either way, the kit still exists from the usual places.
-
From my tinboat days, if you want a livewell, get a large inexpensive ( but not foam) ice chest and a small bilge pump. BPS used to sell a little kit that had the pump, a hose to a section of PVC pipe as an aerator etc. Keeping fresh water in it might be a PITA on a hot day, but a second pump ( one to fill the livewell, one to circulate or pump out the stale water) could solve that. Not perfect, but it would get your boat into a tournament.

3 lb 13 oz a very long time ago on the James arm of Table Rock on a black fliptail worm at night. Yes, fliptail...that long ago.

If you go to Thule's website, there is a simple search thing you can plug the year and model, etc of your car and click a button and it will tell you what parts you need, complete with parts numbers, or tell you they dont make parts for it. If Thule doesnt make them, Yakima might and they have a similar way to search. IMO there were lots of Aleros made so I'd be surprized if neither of those two made roof racks for them.

+ 2 And FWIW I just now looked out the window and the sky appears to be right where it's always been, rather than having fallen when I wasn't looking. YMMV

Thats very cool...way to go !!

I thank each of you for making it plain to me that I never want to mess with powder paint !

It is really tough at Mizzou, as at most large schools, to get in severe doo-doo if you are a star athlete in a major sport. However, even at Mizzou, a few players ( such as the late John Matuzak) and more recently both Derrick Washington from the football team, and that basketball player managed it. It is traditionally even harder to screw it up to that degree at either OU or OSU. Justin Blackmon stayed on the field at OSU ( except for a token 1 game suspension by the school for a DWI with a blood alcohol level that indicates major problems) well enough to be # 5 in the NFL draft, and had a good rookie season but has been suspended 3 times since then for violations of the league's drug policy and he may or may not be back on the NFL field for the coming season. It would not surprize me in DGB becomes the next Justin Blackmon.

I am starting to look at the same thing with a passenger car and I have talked face to face with both Alpine Shop and REI. The guys at both places very strongly said Yakima or Thule. I have seen folks in passenger cars with kayaks on roof racks, both the J shape things that hold the yak on its side, and the very wide U shape that hold the sides of the yak, passing me on interstates and I am not well known for sticking to the speed limit. It occurs to me that I have never seen a yak or a canoe crunched and laying on the shoulder on a highway.

Making Your Opinion Count; Your Voice Heard
LarrySTL replied to rFisherk's topic in Conservation Issues
I knew a guy who for years was very active in behind the scene politics in the Mo Legislature and he said that emails from 10 people who live in a legislators district is, on many issues, a huge amount of input and likely to at least make the legislator consider supporting what those 10 people wanted. My present rep is a woman who actually seems to *get* issues about conservation and MDC. -
