Mdc Killed An Elk

Did the MDC ever post how the elk turned out BBQ'd. I wonder if artificially implanted elk taste like native elk. It was a $30,000 meat shoot.

MDC tried introducing pheasants all over the place in MO, including down in the Bootheel somewhere, and they didn't survive most places. That's why I called pheasants a fiasco.

Are there any ruffed grouse left anywhere in the state? They tried for a long time to get them going good in the Ozarks.

Of course, there was also the possibly stupid move of introducing spotted bass in some of the streams on the northern edge of the Ozarks.

Point is, they've made mistakes, but most of them were decades ago. I think they have learned their lessons, and know to do the homework.

Never mind the bollocks.

I want one person to say that the re-introduction of elk in the Peck Ranch area has negatively impacted his life. Directly. In other words, please explain to us how these elk have made your life worse. If not, then, what's the big deal? You would think that the MDC put rattlesnakes on their trails, or aboriginal pygmies with poison blow darts hiding in trees at various river accesses, given the absurd and vitriolic reactions to this (non) event.

In fact, to be honest, our MDC has made your life better. You get to fish and hunt in so many varied and wonderful areas, it's not funny. You buy a licence, and thousands upon thousands of acres of accessible land and water is at your disposal. For you. To enjoy and use.

Yet, you're not satisfied. Nor happy. In fact, your downright paranoid about our MDCs intentions.

What is it about these elk that gets your panties in a twist? Let's be honest here. The existence of those elk, in that area, will have absolutely ZERO affect on your life. Forever. Period.

So.

Let's open a cold, frosty one, and get fishing. F*** those overgrown cows.

PS: Oh Gawd, please spare us this "native" and /or "natural" twaddle. Boring. Move on.

Joe, your post hit me hard. I was married to a wonderful pygmy woman once. She broke my heart when she left me, ironically claiming I wasn't half the man she thought I was.

Which brings to mind Otters.Seen one at the river.I remember in '80's MDC was saying they would be nice to have, numbers would never be enough for Trapping they were just a Novelty.

Well I've seen areas they have killed all the Bull Frogs,Crawdads and who knows how many Fish. They are Aquatic Killing Machines.

Yeah, I tend to think they do their homework, but it's a pretty tricky business. I'm not aware of anything they've done that has turned disastrous. Of course, otters come to mind like oneshot says, but their negative effects seem to be pretty localized, mostly in ponds. And that sucks if it's your pond -- I get that. I try to do my part every fall by trying to eradicate ditch chickens from Missouri, even thought they're not hurting anybody.

I read this and shook my head. Release Elk in the wild, and then shoot them when they get out and start roaming? Am I missing something here?

Shaking my head as well!! Lived in CO Rockies for years and trust me...They roam! I do not believe they were not able to sedate this animal. I support the program but they are wild and there is no way they can be kept in a designated area over a period of time. WTF are they thinking. They reintroduced Elk in Sawyer county WI where I have summer home. They wander all over the place to get away from the wolves. I am livid about this horseshit. I dont recall total costs but it was way over the initial budgeted plan. Nice 30k well spent on this Elk.

So let me get this straight...elk roam. Yep. They aren't going to be doing much roaming to get away from wolves in MO. The reason they'll roam in MO is to find better food. Given that 99% of the open ground in and around the Current River country is pasture, and 99.9% of the pasture is fescue, which is basically worthless for most wildlife and not all that appealing to elk, they might not be very attracted to it, but if they get tired of browsing the woodlands they may start looking for some practically non-existent cropland.

Which is why MDC is trying to appease the landowners and keep them in the wild, public lands. It seems like the biggest complaint among those here, who don't have a stake in the game in the form of land ownership in the area, is all the money they spent. I get that. I'd like to see money spent on other things. But geez, give this a chance to work. It ain't like it's irreversible. If elk suddenly begin to cause a lot of problems, it would be pretty easy to turn the locals loose to wipe them out. Then, yes, the money would have been wasted. But in the meantime, I think it's worth a shot. Elk seem to be doing okay in Arkansas without too many problems.

Why is it worth the shot, Al?

Are the elk a tourist draw? Who would go to Peck Ranch just to see these pet elk with yellow radio collars on them?

As someone else said, Lone Elk Park has them. Zoo's have them. Exotic Animal Paradise has them. I've seen them down on the Buffalo in Arkansas and they seemed almost tame. Looked like any other grazing livestock all bunched together and oblivious to all the traffic coming and going around them at the Ponca access.

They are a roaming animal but yet they want them to stay put. That makes no sense to me. Waste of money.
