Brand new from Gamakatsu, I've been waiting for these to come out in EWG's. The short shank magic eye was only manufactured in round bend until now. The magic eye allows you to change out hooks without split ring pliers. I think these will outlast the KVD's

It's a very nice hook I'm sure. I've used the magic eye hooks and they are no doubt easier, but I don't really have a problem with the regular hooks. Oval split rings are a pain, but hooks aren't too bad.

I just really prefer round bend to EWG style. I just don't have any confidence in the EWG style for a treble hook.

In theory, it would be nice to have long shank hooks for open water and short shank hooks for heavy cover. I think I only carry standard round bend trebles with me.

As long as the hooks don't interfere with each other on a crankbait, you can get by with long shanks. One advantage to a short shank is you can go to a bigger size hook and still not interfere in some cases. As far as round bend verses EWG, I guess its a matter of confidence.

Thanks for the info, I'm always interested in new tackle, but from what I see, I'll stay with the Mustad KVD's as a replacement on cranks. Mustads are less expensive, come in a wider range of sizes and are just as good a hook IMO. I can get a treb off and on a crank pretty quickly with my split ring pliers so the magic eye feature to me is not a big deal.

Let us know how they work. Have thought the magic eye might be nice for pond and small boat trips, when I might not have split ring pliers packed. The gammie EWG footprint works well. Use them on my tied tails for topwater and on jig spoons. Also a good wiggle wart replacement hook.

Well dtrs, I've been using them for about 6 months now and have replaced all my trebles with either Gamakatsu EWG trebles or the Gamakatsu short shank EWG trebles. My fish landing percentage has increased by about 30%.

Of course it's a guess but a dramatic increase none the less.

Guess you have to cut the old ones off with wire cutters if you aren't using splitring pliers?

Have not tried them...been pretty happy with the KVD's...will give them a shot when my current stash runs out.

I just looked at them and the thing I see that is sny different than most treble hooks is the eye is very smooth. That is a really important point to me. I am sure many fishermen get break offs because the hook they are using have crimp shut eyes.
