jdmidwest Posted March 1, 2013 Posted March 1, 2013 Yeah. Lets set one up for next year. Since it opens on a Saturday the crowds will be lighter...... It used to be fun when I was in my 20's. You could even get a campsite back then without a reservation. I remember one opener sitting up the tent in a 3" snow and waking up the next morning to a freezing rain that had glued my zipper shut. But I had a truck load of slabs and had a nice fire that weekend the whole time. I think there were only 3k people for that one. We drove in the night before and slept in the truck at Tan Vat till about 3am and went to the lodge when it opened. Bought the tag and waded out to shoulder up to the herd. By the time the horn blowed, they were 2 deep behind me and my red ball waders were freezing me. But I caught some fish. Members Wornica Posted March 2, 2013 Members Posted March 2, 2013 Enjoyed seeing the governor use a fly rod and catch a trout.
Gavin Posted March 2, 2013 Posted March 2, 2013 You have declared Shenanigans CW! Gotta follow through on that!
Idylwilde Posted March 2, 2013 Author Posted March 2, 2013 A little insight about governor Nixon, Outside the office and political crap he deals with he is a outdoors man that loves the rivers and lakes of the state. Fiy Fishing is not just a act for the voters it's a joy for him. He supports all the rights and needs of all the outdoor activities like hunting and fishing. I have no opinion of the political republican or democrat side of the man but I do respect the outdoors man he is. As a note about his abilities as a fly angler, He not only is a great caster and can land a fly in inches of a target he can choose the fly, tippet, and line weight to do the job. During this movie he could have put on his waders and walked into the stream and pushed other anglers to the side and had better fishing, but chose to fish basically behind them in less fish-able water. I have seen other officials come to the park and have special holes stocked for them alone and the public was shoved to the side while they fished. I was impressed of the educate he showed yesterday. By the way he was using a TFO 5W 8'6" Special addition rod that only 5 were made. and a 5W sinking line with 5X tippet, and #10 black woolly bugger. Didn't see the reel to say what it was but it had a loud clicker drag. This is not a political endorsement of a party or governor, but an insight of a outdoors man who happens to be governor. Take a Child Fishing they are the future of the sport.
Members living_waters Posted March 2, 2013 Members Posted March 2, 2013 I can see from the video that Nixon shares some of the same thoughts as I do about gun issues.... When he jokingly points the starting pistol at the fishermen, if I was in the crowd the thought would probably cross my mind also When I first seen the lines of people I thought it would be way too much fun to wade out in the middle of them with my daughters old pink snoopy pole and dressed like this I know this idea is done on the board and I hope no one minds if I crash the party but it looks like fun. Us old people have to let our hair down every now and then(if we had any) lol "To him, all good things, trout as well as eternal salvation, come by grace and grace comes by art and art does not come easy." -Norman Maclean
duckydoty Posted March 2, 2013 Posted March 2, 2013 I've always wanted to hit the opener with a 70's theme. Big afro wig on, some Elvis sun glasses, bell bottom cordaroys in purple, flowered shirts with the fluff around the sleeves and collar and a giant boom box strapped to my back playing a good recording of "Play that funky music white boy" blaring. A Little Rain Won't Hurt Them Fish.....They're Already Wet!! Visit my website at.. Ozark Trout Runners
Jerry Rapp Posted March 2, 2013 Posted March 2, 2013 you guys are bad. I have always thought about standing on that underwater dam at Montauk(white oak hole) on opening day with a good old ambassaduer baitcaster, 20lb line, 6 1/2 foot rod, and a big muskey lure tied on with multiple treble hooks. When the horn sounds, cast as far up the hole as I can, reel all the tangled lines in, cut off the musky lure, and let them duke it out.
Gavin Posted March 2, 2013 Posted March 2, 2013 Sound like fun...beer, bloodies & irish coffee before the buzzer, fish taco's for lunch. More the merrier!
