Ham Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 I think I rememebr seeing some posts about this here. Who is doing the Tenkara thing? Is it as much fun as you thought it was going to be? What species of fish have you caught on it? Any unmitigated disasters fishing with it? I fully intend to feed my goofy side as much as possible in 2014. The little bit I've looked into it, it seems fun and mighty goofy. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
timsfly Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 I've been fishing a tenkara rod for 7 or 8 years now, it has it limitations, especially on big fast water, I fish it a lot on Roaring River, and I've used it on Crane creek and flat creek, and I've used it on some streams out west, a joy on small water, and trout 18" and smaller, I tried it on Taney, it was fun till you hit a hot 16-17 inch fish I've fished it out of my kayak, it is fun for bluegill, and other panfish, I've got tenkara type rods that are 6',7', 10' and one that is 16' they all have their place, but they'll never replace my fly rods. fishinwrench Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 Tenkara would be a useful technique for when you start trying to fill the chub, shiner, and sunfish slots
laker67 Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 in Oklahoma it is called jigger fishing or doodlesocking. an ancient art form similar to cane pole farm pond. Buzz and Ham 2
Ham Posted January 7, 2014 Author Posted January 7, 2014 It's taken me 50 years to figure out the kind of conventional fishing rods I like. Now, I'm tethering on the brink of an abyss of new nomenclature and rod characteristics. God help me. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish

dennis boatman Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 ...Small mountain streams, I use a 6' rod...great and productive on Brookies... A strike indicator is just a bobber...
Ham Posted January 7, 2014 Author Posted January 7, 2014 But I want it for small Ozark streams and not necessarily trout. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
moguy1973 Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 I bet it'd work great for any small wade-able Ozark stream, for any species of fish. -- JimIf people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles. -- Doug Larson
RSBreth Posted January 8, 2014 Posted January 8, 2014 I've been using cheap crappie "Jig Poles" as half-arsed Tenkara rods since my son got rocking the panfish pole action a few years ago. Neat, interesting, and pretty simple.
