dtrs5kprs Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 I don't know exactly. Every one I've had has had some problems, if not outright been a complete pain in the rear. Yet for some reason I still gravitate towards them. Currently I'm trying out the newer design Zebco 33 platinum reel, and I have to say I'm pretty happy with it so far, but I've only had it for a few weeks. The new ABU's are not awful, and the bps green reel. It is kind of a combo of features with a decent gear ratio. Those higher end zebcos are OK, but gosh they are $$$. My kids still use them for now, so am more of a connoisseur than I'd like to be. They do work really well with 30# braid for running redfins.
dtrs5kprs Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 From laughing, or from standing on your head? Either way that banana this morning should help ward off muscle spasms. Crap, I forgot to type upside down to make up for it.
Al Agnew Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 Fishing is supposed to be enjoyable and fun, so if you enjoy fishing with stuff that wasn't designed to be fished that way, don't worry about it. But...keep in mind that spinning reels weren't designed to be used on casting rods, and spincast reels weren't designed to be used upside down. You might be good with them that way, but the fact is that if you put the same time and effort into getting proficient at stuff used the way it was meant to be used, you'd probably be more comfortable and more efficient than you'll ever get with the stuff the way you're using it.
fishinwrench Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 I actually kinda "get" the intuitive reeling backwards thing. You are "rolling" the handle in the direction you want your bait to move. So actually to someone who hasn't been raised around fishing rods/reels I can see where it could seem/and feel correct. Kinda like pedaling a unicycle.
Members Simonthegolfer Posted April 16, 2014 Author Members Posted April 16, 2014 No. The reel is not on top of the rod lol. I don't want to defile the fishing gods too much. Hahaha
moguy1973 Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 You wouldn't be the first to use a spincast rod with a spinning reel. This guy calls it his "Mavrick Combo" There are only 2 issues I see that will limit the effectiveness of using this combo this way. One has been mentioned, the guides on a spinning rod are bigger for a reason and casting distance will be diminished because of the way the line comes off a spinning reel and smaller guides on the casting rod. The other is the rod is bending the wrong way. It was designed to have a "backbone" so the strength of the rod is on the side that is on the outside of the bend when fighting a fish. This can cause the rod to have undue stress on the wrong side of the rod and cause it to possibly break when bent that way. -- JimIf people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles. -- Doug Larson
MOPanfisher Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 Uncle Steve says "GO FOR IT". I think I am gonna start referring to myself in the third person too.
Jerry Rapp Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 upside down spincast reels. I remember a Zebco 33 spincast made upside down. Trigger button, instead of a bail. Used it many year. And we use to take old Johnson Centuries turned upside down and reversed the handles for an ultra light upside down spincast.
