Big Brown Trout
Hey guys just a quick question, are float tubes allowed (and safe) on Taneycomo? Let the summer of Carp, begin.
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted June 17, 2014 Root Admin Share Posted June 17, 2014 They are allowed. Safe? Good question. Your profile in a tube is very small. Big boats, fog ... I fear for the kayakers out there, honestly. You would have to use good judgement and stay in places where you wouldn't get run over.
Travis Swift
Whe we were there 2 weeks ago and the storms were rolling in an older couple in the Kayaks were coming by us and everyone up river was flying by fast and you couldn't see 10 yards in front of you because of the fog and they were going way to fast trying to beat th storm. We were at Riverlake fishing the bluff side and this nice couple paddles by and the lady looks scared to death. I said how far do you have to go? they said they were supposed to call when they got to the nearest take out point. I told them that was Cooper Creek and they were a long ways away in those conditions. I told them where Lilleys was and to get their ASAP and to call from there. I told them Phil probably wouldn't mind at all given the circumstances. When we idled by them they were getting ready to pull in there thank goodness. I looked at my buddy and said "someone is going to die on this lake soon in a kayak". I just couldn't believe they let them out on the lake knowing storms were coming
Seth
I got too close for comfort to some kayakers just above Fall creek one morning while it was still foggy a few weeks ago. Good thing we weren't moving fast because I was right on top of them before I could make them out. You would never see me in a kayak on that lake until after all fog has burned off. Once it is gone I think you would be fine.
Members BLUEWATER
Let me ask this without malice or ill intent to anyone. If you cant see someone in a kayak aren't you going to fast for the conditions?

Travis Swift
That's a possibility yes BUT if you've been on Taney very much at all the fog can sock in quickly and it can get thicker than you would believe. Even at an idle you could be on them before you even know it. That being said there's tons of people that go WAY to fast in the fog and alot are in rental boats that don't normally operate a boat. When the fog is that thick I usually hug the bank with my trolling motor to state out of the middle of the lake. The morning Seth was talking about it was hard to see 10 feet in front of you. It had actually burnt off then reappeared with the coming storms in a matter of minutes.
Seth
Travis already said what I was going to say since we were both down the same weekend. You could literally see about 10-15 yards in front of the boat in spots. I was idling along just past Fall creek when I met the kayakers. I was still far enough away that there was no chance of hitting them but still a lot closer than I would ever want to be to a small watercraft. I was within 15 yards of them before I seen them and turned. Jets turn slow at an idle so I had to goose it a hair to get turned quickly because they were paddling downstream towards me and I was idling upstream right at them. Wayne SW/MO
I would say no to safe, at least as far as extreme inconvenience. I would afraid that between fighting some current or being hit with a gate opening you might have to call a taxi to get back. It would probably be fine at Rockaway or Empire. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
