Smalliebigs Posted October 3, 2014 Posted October 3, 2014 It's pretty scary. They've been in the lower Meramec for quite a while now, and have not moved up into the upper river in any numbers yet. But several years ago I floated Joachim Creek from De Soto downstream, and they were in every good sized pool all the way up to De Soto. Time will tell, I guess. Al I have seen them above Onandaga....they are everywhere....I had a friend snag one below Wesco, although he had no pic,so I don't know if it was a story or not??? They will travel as far as the river will let them.
LittleRedFisherman Posted October 3, 2014 Author Posted October 3, 2014 As far as the Current river goes, I talked to a friend last night, he says there in Gas Plant lake which is an oxbow off current river near Reyno AR. From Doniphan, that probably like 20 to 25 miles downriver. He says it's full of them There's no such thing, as a bad day fishing!
skeeter Posted October 3, 2014 Posted October 3, 2014 Asian Carp do very well in cold water which is why the Great Lakes fishery is freaking out about them. The Administration caved-into the barge Industry and refused to install a lock/dam on the upper Illinois which would have blocked their access to the Great Lakes. Instead, they continue to rely on an electronic barrier. I can just picture all these carp lined up at that barrier just waiting for a power failure ;-)
Greasy B Posted October 3, 2014 Posted October 3, 2014 I suspect the Great Lakes are doomed to the have these fish sooner rather than later. On a local note It will be interesting to see how long it takes invasive carp to breach the high dams in Missouri and Arkansas. Does anyone know if they have made it above Bagnell dam? Above Cannon? Bull Shoals? His father touches the Claw in spite of Kevin's warnings and breaks two legs just as a thunderstorm tears the house apart. Kevin runs away with the Claw. fishinwrench Posted October 3, 2014 Posted October 3, 2014 Does anyone know if they have made it above Bagnell dam? There have been a couple (at least) caught on trotlines in LO but I don't know of anyone that has seen or heard of any more than that. The bowfishers haven't mentioned seeing any above Bagnell to my knowledge. Of course the Osage below Bagnell is ate up with them to the point that they probably outnumber gamefish there.
Mark Posted October 3, 2014 Posted October 3, 2014 I was under the impression that Asian carp needed slug and silt on the bottom to feed, and would not do well in the gravel bottoms of most Ozark streams. Maybe the lower Current in Arkansas is not gravel, I don't know. Regardless, not a good thing at all.
Greasy B Posted October 3, 2014 Posted October 3, 2014 I found a USGS map showing distribution but it looks outdated. Ham Posted October 3, 2014 Posted October 3, 2014 Does anyone know if they have made it above Bagnell dam? Above Cannon? Bull Shoals? NO WAY they are making it above the Bull Shoals dam UNLESS they are illegally introduced. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
Greasy B Posted October 3, 2014 Posted October 3, 2014 Illegally, inadvertently or intentionally they will get there. I got to thinking about the map showing distribution. Its likely out of date with every high water event. His father touches the Claw in spite of Kevin's warnings and breaks two legs just as a thunderstorm tears the house apart. Haris122 Posted October 3, 2014 Posted October 3, 2014 I know as far as the Meramec goes, I've seen them in good numbers as far up as Pacific Palisades. Can't say I've noticed them (in groups at least) further upstream than that, but then again I don't frequent the Meramec further upstream of there anywhere near as as much as below it. I don't know about the silver carp, but I do know there's at least the bighead carp, in lake of the ozarks. Not too many years ago I remember seeing an article on a sad new state record of a huge bighead coming from LOZ.
