Jerry Rapp Posted November 4, 2014 Posted November 4, 2014 I gave my viewpoint based on my experience. I started it out as a question about does color really make that much difference. and it turned into a bashing. Spend your money as you wish. If I wanted some custom colors Tim would be my first choice, but custom colors do not put 20lbs in your livewell. I have won two boats in my fishing life. Both came on plain old white spinnerbaits and when I had the opportunity to prefish several days to figure out where the fish were and how to catch them. Sorry for expressing my opinion on an open forum.

Sorry for expressing my opinion on an open forum. That is perfectly fine to voice your opinion. But on more than a few occasions you have said something to deter someone from using/buying someone's product. I know of two instances you did it in the swap and sell forum here on OA in which a guy was selling his custom painted wiggle warts and you bashed the thread and told people to buy elsewhere for cheaper. Pretty rude I think. Another one was a call out on a boat someone was trying to sell here as well saying it was way over priced. That is in bad taste IMO. Probably better left unsaid in these situations.

I don't take exception to anyone sharing their opinion on whether custom colors work better than stock ones, whether one brand of boat is better than another, or who makes the best BBQ in the Ozarks. By gosh, it's still America -- at least for a little bit longer -- and thank the good Lord above we all still have the right to voice our opinion without apology. But when someone starts even suggesting how others should spend their money -- or NOT spend their money on the services of a fellow forum member -- then my opinion is that you are over the line. Perhaps I spoke a bit strongly, and for that I apologize, but I will not back down from my position that how anyone on this forum or beyond spends their money is their own business exclusively. And for the record, I've won my share of money on plain ol' stock baits, including white spinnerbaits. War Eagles, of course.

Like I said above, if you want to pay a bunch of money for custom colored baits, go for it. I hope in 30 years that I will still be on here and watching your posts abkeenan because you will know a lot more then. And hopefully by then, you will be using your real name to post.
Hughesy Posted November 5, 2014 Posted November 5, 2014 I agree Jerry has the right to voice his opinion. I am not offended at all. God bless America for that. This also means we all have this right. Soooo, I respectfully disagree that color doesn't matter. When I came out with the purple and chartreuse rouge over 30 years ago, it would out fish any color on the market on Table Rock at the time. I guided for 17 years on Table Rock and there were many times my clients wanted to throw their favorite colors instead of the pc rogue. The pc rogue would out fish their colors every time and they would switch. The first year I came out with it, it won tens of thousands of dollars in tournament winnings with many bags over 20lbs. Now, just about every manufacturer has that color or some variation of it. How many times have you been fishing with a buddy and your both throwing the same style lure in different colors and one of you was catching all of the fish until the other guy switched colors. Try catching them on a shad colored wiggle wart when they are eating green crawdads and see how you do. Jerry won two boats throwing a white spinnerbait. Would he have won them on a chartreuse or black spinnerbait. Probably not. White was the right color at the time. Then, you get people that say these pretty custom painted baits are for catching fisherman. This is true. Fisherman like Larry Nixson, George Cochran, Stacy King, Randy Blaukat, Tommy Martin, Gary Klien, John Sappington, Brent Chapman, Robbie Dodson, Bill Beck, KVD, Mike McClelland, Buster Loving, and of course our own Bill Babler plus many, many more. Thanks to everyone who has purchased my lures over the past 30 years. Color does matter!
Sprint21fter Posted November 5, 2014 Posted November 5, 2014 Color does matter and for 4.99 with the help of BPS and those good colors we are getting a bargin.
fishingaddiction Posted November 5, 2014 Posted November 5, 2014 +1 Hughesy. There is no question in my mind that color does matter. Is the water color and visibility the same in all lakes? Do colors of baits look different as depth of water increases? Is black and blue a better color for muddy water? Are natural color lures better for clear water? Born to Fish. Forced to Work.
Champ188 Posted November 5, 2014 Posted November 5, 2014 I don't know the validity of this because those who published the research had a vested interest (Color-C-Lector) in it, but I recall there being some very compelling data put out in the 1980s about bass being able to recognize colors. Supposedly, a device with 3 compartments was placed in a large aquarium with some bass. Each compartment had a different-colored door. Food was placed behind one of these doors and only one. When the bass bumped the door with their noses, the door opened and they got the food. After several days, the bass learned to immediately go to the specific door where the food was located. After several days, the food was moved either to the left or right but the door color remained the same. Supposedly, the bass followed that door, recognizing the color of the door more than its location. As I recall, no matter where that particular color of door was moved, the bass went directly to it. Hopefully I'm recalling this accurately. Pretty sure I am.

Bluff-Bassin Posted November 6, 2014 Posted November 6, 2014 No way to difinitivly say how much specific colors matter to bass but I can say with certainty Tim paints some great looking baits as I just got back 3 old warts he brought new life too.
