Daryk Campbell Sr Posted December 23, 2014 Posted December 23, 2014 I have tried the Montauk specials, but no luck at Montauk. Any advice how to use them. Totally new on that type of fishing, anything would be appreciated. Money is just ink and paper, worthless until it switches hands, and worthless again until the next transaction. moguy1973 Posted December 23, 2014 Posted December 23, 2014 We usually cast it out and just slowly reel it in. If it needed to get down a little farther we would add a small split shot about a foot above. I've also fished twice in park ponds here in St. Louis for trout in the winter and that's all I've ever caught them on. -- JimIf people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles. -- Doug Larson
Seth Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 I used to throw spinnners a lot. They would produce a few fish, but not nearly as many as a jig.
ollie Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 I'll just stick to the jigs I tie myself. They haven't let me down at all. ollie Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 aw Ham, where is the fun in that? "you can always beat the keeper, but you can never beat the post" There are only three things in life that are certain : death, taxes, and the wind blowing at Capps Creek!
Ham Posted December 24, 2014 Posted December 24, 2014 I simply get more frustration that satisfaction from tying my own jigs and flys. I have a handful of staple flys that I tie. Zebras, WB, Clousers, a few streamers. I struggle with Y2K's and Red Butts. I desperately need to be taught basic dubbing skillz. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. brittsnbirds Posted December 25, 2014 Posted December 25, 2014 Daryk is a Montauk special the in-line spinner with a small woolie bugger on it? If so that's the one I like. Get several spinners, gold, silver, hammered or not hand full of small woolies with the red "butt" and go for it. You can switch them out with the different areas. That's all I used as a kid! BTW y'all Merry Christmas!! Terrierman 1

Daryk Campbell Sr Posted December 26, 2014 Posted December 26, 2014 Yes Britts, how do you prefer to fish it? Moguy likes to let it sink, and slowly retrieve it. I live just south of St Louis, and the ponds are stocked for winter. Will have to try that out. I think I was casting, letting it fall, bringing it back up, repeatedly. Didn't work out for me.
