Seth Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 You'd think a pearl NED rig would work wonders on bedded fish. Do you guys feel that the mushroom heads with a wire guard are a necessity when fishing in area's with a little bit of wood on the bottom? I'm a river guy and it seems every place I fish has a little bit of wood on the bottom.

I'm a river guy and it seems every place I fish has a little bit of wood on the bottom. I do, but I may be biased. I started with open hooks, and they were ok for swimming, less so for fishing on the bottom, awful in cover. Big wood was not too bad, but little spindly sticks were a terror. Forget brushpiles. Dock cables were also bad. A lot of folks like the open hooks, but a lot of those guys are also using cheap hooks and straightening them out. That screams missed or lost fish to me. If I had the chance to fish more I might have left it at that, but with limited time I want to stick each one like it is going to be my last one. Ever. A wire guard is not precisely like going 4x4 with the little rig, but it sure helps.
Ham Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 Jigs with Weed guards are better, but I do fine with open hook ones too. River / Creeks/ or lakes. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
Seth Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 I figured it would help quit a bit. I've noticed a big difference with how snag proof my hair jigs are when using jig heads with and without a wire weed guard.
Quillback Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 The weed guards help to lessen snags for me. Still do get snagged up, and usually I'll lose at least 2 or 3 rigs a day. But, I don't hesitate to throw them at anything, brushpiles, cedar trees, I'll throw it in there. Only exception is dock cables, I'll try and avoid those, freaking things are lure magnets and line frayers.
crazy4fishin Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 Dave great video - that is why I use it at the "lakes" up here and consistently out catch the guys fishing next to me......I did see that the Z man did come out with some that were pre - cut. I picked up a package and they work great! C4F Crazy4fishinA Cornhusker

Gives you the guts to put something in a nasty place tied to 6# line.
David Unnerstall Posted January 21, 2015 Posted January 21, 2015 You will catch fish, but you need to cut the worm in half & thread it on there. Don't use a 5" zinker z I will cut the worm in half and I won't use a 5" worm.
David Unnerstall Posted January 21, 2015 Posted January 21, 2015 And I hope you have some of the other colors. Like Green Pumpkin, PB and J, and Dirt. So I am going back to Tackle Warehouse. Wow, this resolution lasted about a week. Ham 1
