We eat oatmeal for late dinner all the time. Quick oats. Our goodies are crasins, native pecans and brown sugar.

Someone educate me on why oatmeal should be “steel cut”?

Triple play of last three main meals. Friday was hamburger steak, yesterday Saturday was venison back strap. Today was hybrid fried. IMG_20240223_153510700_HDR.jpgIMG_20240223_154728590.jpgIMG_20240224_160646812_HDR.jpgIMG_20240224_161403009.jpgIMG_20240225_153950661.jpg

There’s a difference in texture for sure. More like a porridge but there is a little chew. I think there’s a little difference in flavor too.

We’ve been enjoying the overnight prep lately. 4 to 1 ratio of water to steel-cut oats and a pinch of salt. Bring to a boil for a three to four minutes then cover and turn off the heat. Let them sit overnight and warm them for a few minutes the following morning. It’s nice to have something quick, especially on work days.

Edit: I updated the times to get it more creamy.

Yum Fresh salsa. Too pretty and colorful to be anything but fresh. I love summer when Pat whips up a fresh batch.

So that you have to chew them, like eating cattle feed.  I used to fix a pint jar of quick oats with cinnamon, honey or brown sugar and raisins pour full of milk and put it in the fridge the night before.  Refrigerator oats, was pretty good actually, and would stay with ya till lunch.  Got clever one and though I could skip the sugar/honey/milk and pour it full of coca cola.  It sucked.

When I was a kid my mom often made a quick tater soup and since dad and I both liked oysters she would add a can of oysters to it.  Tonight I decided to make a version on wing it mode.  Diced up some bacon, thin slice some onions, tossed in a bit of garlic just because.  Added some chicken stock after it could down a bit, added the juice from the oysters, a dash of Cajun, a dash if wash you sister sauce, and a dash if liquid smoke.  Dumped in the thin sliced taters and once they cooked added quite a bit of half and half, the oysters, a couple cans if Itty bitty clams and some parsley for color.  And against all odds it is pretty dang good and a little nostalgic.  Nuked an acorn squash just because who doesn't like acorn squash.
