Flysmallie Posted March 18, 2015 Posted March 18, 2015 After all the trouble & expense, I have to ask myself 1 question. Is all of this really worth it to paint a few lures every year that I might use 20% of the time? (The Ned rig accounts for 80% of my fish catches anyway) Probably not, but I enjoy having my own custom colored baits. I think the problem here is that you are trying to use dollars to determine something's worth. That might be what society has led you to believe but it is wrong. Ham and Daryk Campbell Sr 2

That might be what society has led you to believe but it is wrong. It was actually worth a tournament win back in November, so in that case its worth it. Turning beater warts into game changers is worth all the effort after a big smallmouth slams into your creation.

But what the heck, if you enjoyed it, we'd end up in the same place. Cheers! John
5bites Posted March 18, 2015 Posted March 18, 2015 Absolutely. The rod finish deal is a question of how many coats are you willing to apply and cure versus a single pass through with some others. For sure. My answer to that is as few as possible lol. Hopefully just two. I've bee very fortunate to have some good mentors get me started and answer endless questions. It helps make better decisions even if my experience level isn't that high. As far as dollar value I've told my wife several times I should have had Matt Davis of Otterods just build me a few customs in the beginning and been done with it. At the same time when I pick up a factory rod and think "now why the heck did they do that?" then I remember why it's nice to have the freedom to build one exactly how I want. Keep in mind I fish with factory built rods though mostly. I'm a sucker for trying new things. Having a warranty is nice too. The lure painting thing I blame on my kids. I'm not sure how that works out really but I'm going with it.
Guest Posted March 18, 2015 Posted March 18, 2015 I use this stencil to paint the eyes on wiggle warts. Just tape off the holes your not using & spray.
Guest Posted March 19, 2015 Posted March 19, 2015 I've been having a problem with transparent black. So I thinned in down with reducer but it's still took dark on the shell. I decided to pour out 1/3 of the reducer & fill it with transparent black. Now it's super thin, like skim milk. Let's see how it turns out.

Kee sims Posted March 19, 2015 Author Posted March 19, 2015 I bought an iwata last night. I've seen a few people using the helping hands for doing jewelery and stuff to hold the bait during paint. Anyone have experience with that good or bad? Or maybe something they prefer better. I plan on trying to pick up paint, compressor and some dev con 2ton with paint brushes to apply, also a respirator. Anything else I should look into or think about grabbing? Post has been awesome so far. Thank you again guys!
