Haris122 Posted January 7, 2016 Posted January 7, 2016 New Year and my recent trip to Meramec Springs started me off pretty good I'd say for this year, especially with not having caught anything this year up until the trip. None of them were brand new species but there were definitely a couple I didn't catch for a while prior to this. I got 5 Rainbow Trout, 3 Rockbass, 1 Brown Trout, 1 Smallmouth Bass, and 1 Largemouth Bass. Rainbow, and Largemouth aside, it has been at least half a year since I got any of those other ones I think. The Smallmouth especially, I don't think I caught one of, for close to a year if not longer. Last time I got one of them, was also in Meramec Springs, though this one was bigger. Johnsfolly 1
Haris122 Posted January 8, 2016 Posted January 8, 2016 Yeah it was a really pleasant surprise. I think it might have been my most species diverse day yet.

I've done the ice fishing thing before, and if I can help it, I'll never go ice fishing again. Boy I don't know. When I watch Grumpier Old Men, that sure looks like a ton of fun. I would love to do it that way. But when I see people sitting on a bucket in the elements, I'm with you, no way!! Deadstream Posted January 9, 2016 Posted January 9, 2016 There is a reason the lakes up north are covered with shanties. The fishing is outstanding! Give it a try. You can rent shanties with heat for about 25 bucks a day in Michigan, some you can sleep in. Wife caught a 38" Northern once on 3lb test with a teardrop and meal worm. We had been catching yellow perch, crappie and bluegill that day. The bucket is fine if the wind is not blowing, if it is you can set tip-ups and set in the truck and listen to the game. Chief Grey Bear Posted January 9, 2016 Posted January 9, 2016 That's what I'm talking about!! If I lived up there, I'd have shack big enough for me and some buddies, a heater, a place to put a Coleman cook stove, card table. It'd be a blast. And Id love to cook up some Yellow Perch. They look mighty tasty to me! BilletHead Posted January 9, 2016 Posted January 9, 2016 Boy it is good to see you all really do like each other. I want to name the shack you guys will be fishing out of. I will let you guess the name and here is the hint, The B-52's sang this song.
