msamatt Posted April 12, 2015 Posted April 12, 2015 All this recent talk about the Ned Rig made me think, not for the first time, about the cyclical nature of fishing lures as isn't the Ned rig just a variation on Charlie Brewer's Slider fishing approach? I completely understand the desire to find and really master an approach which best suits how you enjoy fishing. That's what its all about. I use a mixed bag of old and new baits but I really love throwing some "old time" lures because they work really well. I, for example, love throwing a black jitterbug at night. I can chuck that bait pretty far out there and it's easy to listen to that blup blup blup sound as you retrieve it while you hope for a fish to knock the snot out of it! I get goosebumps thinking about it!. Tiny torpedo anyone? They still work pretty darn good at times. What "oldie but goodies" are still in your arsenal? Johnsfolly Posted April 12, 2015 Posted April 12, 2015 I never got into jitterbugs, but love to fish hula poppers at night.
Old plug Posted April 12, 2015 Posted April 12, 2015 I bought a Arbogast Mud Bug in 1968 when they first came on the market in 1968. It was plain brown with black strips and it caught its share of fish. We used to call that kind of bait bottom bumpers instead of crank baits. It has a metal bill and plated hooks. I really liked it and fished during my time floating. Those old lures took a lotos punishment being beat them rocks rocky bottoms. I fished it in lakes for awhile also before arthritis got to me and I had to stop using any bait that you needed to bang out a lot of cast and retrieved with higher resistance.

They work, as do Bombers and Hellbenders.
Members ALLSTAR1 Posted April 12, 2015 Members Posted April 12, 2015 If I had it and was still fishing creeks.. I would use a black gnat with an Uncle Josh Pork Rind on my dads bamboo fly rod..It would catch anything that was swimming around back when...
Members Kcdangler Posted April 12, 2015 Members Posted April 12, 2015 I've fished a lot at night on rivers in the Ozarks and never had much luck don't know why April to September all kinds of lures top water cranks plastics even the famed jiTterbug smallie bite no luck even live bait I do fine at daytime no luck at night any explanations ?
Jerry Rapp Posted April 13, 2015 Posted April 13, 2015 Zara Spook. doesn't qualify IMHO, but still a blast to fish.
