WD-40 works pretty good for me. Spray it good, let it sit for a few seconds, and wipe it with a paper towel or rag.

Wire brush or steel wool and then pull a trailer a time or two. If you use it fairly often, it will stay rust free.

WD-40 has a new rust eliminator product out that just sprays on. Other than that, wire-brush, sandpaper and then put a good coating of marine grease on it and, when not in use, cover it with one of those trailer-ball covers.

Rub some Naval Jelly on your ball then work it over with steel wool.
