Al Agnew Posted May 16, 2015 Posted May 16, 2015 Yeah, I guess the state park land extends up the side of the mountain until it hits the refuge land. It is a nice historic site. You can really get a sense of what it might have been like back then when you look at fort's embankments and then look around at the surrounding mountains and think about placing cannons on them to fire down onto the fort. But you can also imagine how difficult it might have been to drag those cannons up there.
Members jackdizo Posted May 17, 2015 Members Posted May 17, 2015 Unfortunately I cannot make the meeting. Would love to hear the current studies and findings the MDC has to present to the MSA. Will be out of town for work. Please let us know what comes from the meeting and how the discussion went, as well as any future meetings that will be taking place such as this. Thanks!
Brian Jones Posted May 18, 2015 Posted May 18, 2015 Forgive me for getting further off topic, but isn't there a cave on the top of Pilot Knob called the "devil's ice box"?? Didn't a kid get trapped in there back in the mid to late 80's and end up losing a limb in the rescue? Seems I remember this happening, and that Reader's Digest had an article about it in their publication. But every time I search the internet for info, I find nothing.
Amery Posted May 18, 2015 Posted May 18, 2015 Pilot Knob is part of the Missouri State Parks, not MDC land. At any rate, as I understand it, the endangered Indian bats that are supposed to live up there are under the protection of the federal government (Endangered Species Act), not state. I have my doubts, too, because I live right across the street from it and have watched in the evening with binoculars and have never seen a bat. Well shoot, if you have never seen a bat through your binoculars then there must not be any, you should report your findings to the Feds.
Smalliebigs Posted May 20, 2015 Posted May 20, 2015 Well I got a detailed update of what the MDC had to say to the MSA and well let's just say things are not gonna change. The MDC is a friggin joke and they tried to talk BS to the MSA about how no matter what they do regulation wise it will have no affect on the water shed. Then why have any regs???? so discouraging and sooo typical of their state agency. I'm really not sure why I'm pissed?? I had hopes of some different news but, oh well. I listen to what people say about streams and fish populations that actually get out on the rivers and catch fish three or four times a week. I don't listen to people who don't get wet but once a month. Oh and the Osage Fork and it's water sheds has the highest river otter populations in Missouri so at least I know where not to go this year :have-a-nice-day:thanks MDC

Smalliebigs Posted May 20, 2015 Posted May 20, 2015 I am reporting this post to Kruger, MDC bashing not allowed. I am not suprised by your report ,as I hear the fisheries dude on the radio monthly. How discouraging is it for a group when it gets told regulations have no bearing on the rivers fish populations???? Especially when that group is for the improvement and preservation of the best native sport fish to rivers. I guess we should just dissolve the MSA because there is no need for anything to be done......the MDC said it won't change for the better. They basically said these rivers are what they are and we have no power to affect what they become. I'm done reporting any poaching to them anymore and I'm gonna keep the maximum amount of Smallmouth I can keep with in the useless regulations every time I go fishing now.......it's on!!!! awhuber 1
fishinwrench Posted May 20, 2015 Posted May 20, 2015 So that's the reason why they won't help protect our right to access the OF....cuz the otter population is so bad ? Gotcha. How were they even able to get a otter population count to know this? Smalliebigs 1
Gavin Posted May 20, 2015 Posted May 20, 2015 I heard something completely different. The results were what they were and opinions are what they are, but I think they are going to make some changes. They were not specific about any possible changes, but they did lay down a timeline. Presentation to management, probably some public hearings regarding proposed changes if management approves, Possible reg changes for the start of the 2017 season at the earliest. Its a slow process...will see how it goes. It isn't all BS because you don't get something you want right now. Chief Grey Bear, awhuber and ness 3
